METHODS FOR COATING A COMPONENT
A method for processing a component is provided and includes masking a first portion of the component with a maskant. The maskant includes a slurry having a plurality of particles in a fluid carrier. The plurality of particles comprises at least one of silicon, carbon, one or more rare earth disilicates, monosilicates or oxides, and combinations thereof. The method includes depositing a silicon-based coating on a second portion of the component via a chemical vapor deposition process and removing the maskant and any overlying silicon-based coating from the first portion of the component.
Aerospace Mirror Manufacturing Assembly
An aerospace mirror having a reaction bonded (RB) silicon carbide (SiC) mirror substrate, and a SiC cladding on the RB SiC mirror substrate forming an optical surface on a front side of the aerospace mirror. A method for manufacturing an aerospace mirror comprising obtaining a green mirror preform comprising porous carbon, silicon carbide (SiC), or both, the green mirror preform defining a front side of the aerospace mirror and a back side of the aerospace mirror opposite the front side; removing material from the green mirror preform to form support ribs on the back side; infiltrating the green mirror preform with silicon to create a reaction bonded (RB) SiC mirror substrate from the green mirror preform; forming a mounting interface surface on the back side of the aerospace mirror from the RB SiC mirror substrate, and forming a reflector surface of the RB SiC mirror substrate on the front side of the aerospace mirror. Additionally, the method can comprise cladding the reflector surface of the RB SiC mirror substrate with SiC to form an optical surface of the aerospace mirror.
HIGH TEMPERATURE OXIDATION PROTECTION FOR COMPOSITES
An oxidation protection system disposed on a substrate is provided, which may comprise a boron layer comprising a boron compound disposed on the substrate; a silicon layer comprising a silicon compound disposed on the boron layer; and at least one sealing layer comprising monoaluminum phosphate and phosphoric acid disposed on the silicon layer.
UV CURED CROSS-LINKED ABRASION RESISTANT LIQUID CERAMIC NANO-COMPOSITE
A UV-cured cross-linked liquid resin reinforced with ceramic inorganic nano-particles and ceramic inorganic abrasion-resistant powder, comprised of 30%-45% by weight resin, wherein the resin is at least one of 2-propenoic acid, homopolymer, isophthalic acid, 1,4-Dimethoxybenzene, saturated polyester resin, and maleic anhydride; 10%-20% by weight industrial ceramic inorganic nano-materials; 30%-45% by weight industrial ceramic inorganic abrasion-resistant powder; and styrene, wherein the styrene is less than 25% by weight of the UV-cured cross-linked liquid resin reinforced with ceramic inorganic nano-particles and ceramic inorganic abrasion-resistant powder.
Method of forming cooling channels in a ceramic matrix composite component
A method of forming a ceramic matrix composite component with cooling channels includes embedding a plurality of wires into a preform structure, densifying the preform structure with embedded wires, and removing the plurality of wires to create a plurality of corresponding channels within the densified structure.
Potting Paste for Honeycomb Reinforcement
The invention relates to a potting paste composition for honeycomb reinforcement having improved fire retardancy characteristics. The potting paste composition comprises (a) a curable polymer; (b) a curing agent for the curable polymer; (c) a fire retardant comprising an ammonium polyphosphate in combination with an ingredient selected from the group consisting of metal hydroxides, expandable graphites, liquid phosphate esters, phosphorous organic compounds or salts thereof, and zeolites; and(d) a filler selected from the group consisting of polymeric microspheres, hollow glass microspheres, and thixotropic fillers; wherein the potting paste has an uncured density determined by the method according to EN ISO 1183 of not more than 0.7100 g/cm.sup.3, preferably of at most 0.680 g/cm.sup.3, more preferably of at most 0.673 g/cm.sup.3, still more preferably of at most 0.660 g/cm.sup.3, even more preferably of at most 0.658 g/cm.sup.3, yet more preferably of at most 0.653 g/cm.sup.3 and in particular of at most 0.620 g/cm.sup.3; and wherein the total content of the fire retardant is at least 5.0 wt.-%, preferably at least 10 wt.-%, more preferably at least 15 wt.-%, relative to the total weight of the potting paste composition.
THROUGH THICKNESS REINFORCEMENT
A method for making a ceramic matrix composite component includes densifying a fibrous preform of the component with a ceramic matrix to form an intermediate component; infiltrating a hole in the intermediate component with an infiltrate material comprising a solid and a metallic alloy whose reaction forms a carbide, silicide, boride or combination thereof, heating the infiltrate material to a temperature in excess of a melting point of the metallic alloy; and sequentially cooling regions of the hole starting from an interior end of the hole to the outer surface of the intermediate component to form a solidified through-thickness reinforcement element. The hole extends in a through-thickness direction and is open to an exterior surface of the intermediate component.
SLURRY PROCESSING FOR DEPOSITION OF RARE EARTH HAFNIUM TANTALATE BASED BARRIER COATINGS
Methods of forming sintered coatings are provided, along with the resulting coatings on a substrate. The sintered coating may comprise a rare earth compound and a sintering aid, with the rare earth compound has the formula: A.sub.1−bB.sub.bZ.sub.1−dD.sub.dMO.sub.6 where A is Al, Ga, In, Sc, Y, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Fe, Cr, Co, Mn, Bi, or a mixture thereof; b is 0 to about 0.5; Z is Hf, Ti, or a mixture thereof; D is Zr, Ce, Ge, Si, or a mixture thereof; d is 0 to about 0.5; and M is Ta, Nb, or a mixture thereof. The coating may be densified at a sintering temperature, such as 1300° C. to 1600° C.
SUSPENSION PLASMA SPRAY COMPOSITION AND PROCESS FOR DEPOSITION OF RARE EARTH HAFNIUM TANTALATE BASED COATINGS
Methods for forming a coating on a surface of a substrate are provided. The method can include: preheating the surface of the substrate; spraying a slurry suspension onto the surface of the substrate to form a coating, wherein the slurry composition comprises a rare earth compound, a sintering agent, and a solvent, wherein the rare earth compound has the formula: A.sub.1-bB.sub.bZ.sub.1-dD.sub.dMO.sub.6 where A is Al, Ga, In, Sc, Y, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Fe, Cr, Co, Mn, Bi, or a mixture thereof; b is 0 to 0.5; Z is Hf, Ti, or a mixture thereof; D is Zr, Ce, Ge, Si, or a mixture thereof; d is 0 to 0.5; and M is Ta, Nb, or a mixture thereof; and thereafter, heat treating the coating to densify the coating from an initial porosity to a sintered porosity.
High temperature oxidation protection for composites
The present disclosure provides a method for coating a composite structure, comprising forming a first slurry by combining a first pre-slurry composition comprising a first phosphate glass composition, with a primary flow modifier and a first carrier fluid, wherein the primary flow modifier comprises at least one of cellulose or calcium silicate; applying the first slurry on a surface of the composite structure to form a base layer; and heating the composite structure to a temperature sufficient to adhere the base layer to the composite structure.
