METHOD AND COMPOSITION FOR CONSTRUCTING SCIENTIFICALLY ENGINEERED AND CONSTRUCTED UNPAVED RUNWAYS

Methods and compositions for the installation of scientifically engineered and constructed unpaved runways are disclosed herein. The compositions are heterogeneous mixtures produced by blending aliphatic or cyclic organic compounds with binders that chemically react with gravel, aggregate, and soil particles to create permanent bonds, resulting in a strengthened and stabilized surface. When blended into the aggregate of a runway surface, the organic compounds act as a carrier fluid, distributing the binder system evenly so particles of all sizes are thoroughly and uniformly coated with the composition. Once the composition is distributed, an adhesion promoting compound reacts with constituents in the aggregate to increase the formation and strength of chemical bonds between particles.

A low-density, high-strength concrete composition that is lightweight and self-compacting or non-self-compacting, with a low weight-fraction of aggregate to total dry raw materials, and a highly-homogenous distribution of a non-absorptive and closed-cell lightweight aggregate such as glass microspheres or copolymer polymer beads or a combination thereof, and the steps of providing the composition or components. Lightweight concretes formed therefrom have low density, high strength-to-weight ratios, and high R-value. The concrete has strength similar to that ordinarily found in structural lightweight concrete but at a lower density, such as an oven-dried density as low as 40 lbs./cu.ft. Such strength-to-density ratios range approximately from above 30 cu.ft/sq.in. to above 110 cu.ft/sq.in., with a 28-day compressive strength ranging from about 3400 to 8000 psi.

A hydraulic composition includes in relative parts by mass with respect to first Portland cement: 100 parts of a first Portland cement the particles of which have a D50 between 10 and 25 μm; from 25 to 76 parts of a second Portland cement the particles of which have a D50 between 0.5 and 6 μm; from 85 to 200 parts of sand; water; the water content being such that the hydraulic composition includes from 170 to 250 kg of water per cubic metre of hydraulic composition; the volume distribution of particle size of the first Portland cement and of the second Portland cement being further such that the ratio D50 of the first Portland cement/D50 of the second Portland cement is greater than 2.

Snap-set, ready-mix joint compound

A joint compound system includes a set-inhibited, pre-wetted, setting-type, ready-mix joint compound and a set initiator. The set-inhibited, pre-wetted, setting-type joint compound includes a ready-mixed, setting-type joint compound base with a calcium-free phosphate set preventing agent that impedes chemical hydration of a gypsum component of the setting-type joint compound. The joint compound base is free of calcium carbonate. The set initiator includes alum to reinitiate the chemical hydration reactions.
