Process for depositing a coating on short fibres by calefaction
A process for depositing a coating on short fibres of carbon or silicon carbide from a coating precursor, the short fibres having a length of between 50 μm and 5 mm, the process including at least heating the short fibres by placing a mixture including the fibres and a liquid phase of the coating precursor in a microwave field so as to bring the surface of the fibres to a temperature allowing the coating on the fibres from the coating precursor to be formed by calefaction.
Method of manufacturing CMC components using boron carbide
A method of manufacturing a ceramic matrix composite component includes pressure casting a fibrous preform with a slurry comprising boron carbide and densifying the fibrous preform using a liquid source of carbon. The method may include forming holes in the fibrous preform before pressure casting the fibrous preform with the slurry. The method may also include sintering the boron carbide after the pressure casting. In various embodiments, the sintering may be performed before the densifying.
Process for rapid processing of SiC and graphitic matrix triso-bearing pebble fuels
A method for producing microencapsulated fuel pebble fuel more rapidly and with a matrix that engenders added safety attributes. The method includes coating fuel particles with ceramic powder; placing the coated fuel particles in a first die; applying a first current and a first pressure to the first die so as to form a fuel pebble by direct current sintering. The method may further include removing the fuel pebble from the first die and placing the fuel pebble within a bed of non-fueled matrix ceramic in a second die; and applying a second current and a second pressure to the second die so as to form a composite fuel pebble.
Sinterable powder for making a dense slip casted pressureless sintered SiC based ceramic product
A SiC based sinterable powder mixture comprising, by dried weight of said powder: a) a mineral content comprising—silicon carbide (SiC) particles, —mineral boron compound particles, the powder comprising at least 50% by weight of SiC and the total mineral content of the powder being at least 90% by weight, b) at least a water insoluble carbon-containing source, in particular a carbon containing resin, the powder comprising at least 1% by weight, and preferably less than 10% by weight, of said water insoluble carbon-containing source, wherein the average particle size of said sinterable powder is comprised between 0.5 to 2.0 micrometers.
HIGH TEMPERATURE COMPOSITES AND METHODS FOR PREPARING HIGH TEMPERATURE COMPOSITES
A method for making a high temperature composite, which is a carbon carbon composite, carbon fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composite, ceramic fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composite, or a carbon silica composite, including: a) providing a precursor part including a resin comprising a poly(aryl ether ketone) (PAEK) and at least one reinforcing material, wherein the resin has a degree of crystallinity of 10% or more; b) pyrolyzing the precursor part to a pyrolyzed part; c) infusing a liquid second resin into the pyrolyzed part to make an infused part; and d) pyrolyzing the infused part to make the carbon carbon composite carbon fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composite, ceramic fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composite, or the carbon silica composite, optionally repeating steps c. through d. Also, a carbon carbon composite, carbon fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composite, ceramic fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composite, or carbon silica composite made by the method.
Systems, devices, and methods for manufacturing carbon ceramic brake discs
Systems, devices, and methods are provided for manufacturing a carbon ceramic brake disc. Generally, a plurality of uncured or partially-cured bulk molding compound preforms or molding compound layers and ventilation cores are placed in a mold cavity and warm-pressed at a first temperature. The ventilation cores are removed from the resulting cured green body. The cured green body is then removed from the mold, and treated through a polymer infiltration and pyrolysis or reactive melt infiltration process. Certain steps can be repeated until a desired target density or weight is attained.
Method of fabricating a ceramic composite
A method of making a ceramic composite component includes providing a fibrous preform or a plurality of fibers, providing a first plurality of particles, coating the first plurality of particles with a coating to produce a first plurality of coated particles, delivering the first plurality of coated particles to the fibrous preform or to an outer surface of the plurality of fibers, and converting the first plurality of coated particles into refractory compounds. The first plurality of particles or the coating comprises a refractory metal.
Fused filament fabrication method using filaments that include a binder configured to release a secondary material
A method may include fused filament fabricating a fused filament fabricated component by delivering a softened filament to selected locations at or adjacent to a build surface. The softened filament may include a binder and a primary material. The binder is configured to release a secondary material upon heating at or above a conversion temperature. The method also may include heating the fused filament fabricated component to a temperature at or above the conversion temperature to sinter the primary material to form a sintered part and cause the binder to release the secondary material within the sintered part.
Polysilocarb materials, methods and uses
Polysilocarb formulations, cured and pyrolized materials, was well as articles and use for this material. In particular pyrolized polysilocarb ceramic materials and articles contain these materials where, the ceramic has from about 30 weight % to about 60 weight % silicon, from about 5 weight % to about 40 weight % oxygen, and from about 3 weight % to about 35 weight % carbon, and wherein 20 weight % to 80 weight % of the carbon is silicon-bound-carbon and 80 weight % to about 20 weight % of the carbon is free carbon.
Nanocomposite silicon oxygen carbon materials and uses
Nanocomposite silicon and carbon compositions. These compositions can be made from polymer derived ceramics, and in particular, polysilocarb precursors. The nanocomposite can have non-voids or be nano-void free and can form larger macro-structures and macro-composite structures. The nanocomposite can contain free carbon domains in an amorphous SiOC matrix.
