A scintillation crystal can include Ln.sub.(1-y)RE.sub.yX.sub.3, wherein Ln represents a rare earth element, RE represents a different rare earth element, y has a value in a range of 0 to 1, and X represents a halogen. In an embodiment, RE is Ce, and the scintillation crystal is doped with Sr, Ba, or a mixture thereof at a concentration of at least approximately 0.0002 wt. %. In another embodiment, the scintillation crystal can have unexpectedly improved linearity and unexpectedly improved energy resolution properties. In a further embodiment, a radiation detection system can include the scintillation crystal, a photosensor, and an electronics device. Such a radiation detection system can be useful in a variety of radiation imaging applications.

An oxide-based solid electrolyte with a high lithium ion conductance is provided. A lithium ion-conducting garnet type oxide includes Li, La, Ga, Zr, a halogen element, and oxygen. A lithium ion conductivity at room temperature is not lower than 1.0×10.sup.−3 S/cm. A proportion of Ga with respect to 1 mole of the oxide may be not larger than 0.5 moles.

The halogen element may be at least one type selected from the group consisting of Cl, Br, and I, and a proportion of Li with respect to 1 mole of the oxide may be not smaller than 6.1 moles and smaller than 6.5 moles.

TRANSPARENT CERAMICS FABRICATED BY MATERIAL JET PRINTING

A method for forming a transparent ceramic, in accordance with one embodiment, includes forming a green body by material jetting an ink, and processing the green body to form the ceramic to transparency. A product, in accordance with one embodiment, includes an ink for forming a transparent ceramic. The ink is physically characterized as having a density, surface tension, and viscosity configured to enable material jetting of the ink in contained, sequential droplets having a volume in the range of about 1 picoliter to about 1 nanoliter when jetted from a nozzle having an inner diameter in the range of about 10 microns to about 300 microns. A product, in accordance with another embodiment, includes a transparent ceramic, at least a portion of the transparent ceramic having layers of less than 50 microns per layer with physical characteristics of formation by material jetting.

A solid ionic conducting material for use in an electrochemical device comprises an oxyhydroxide or hydrated oxide derived from of an oxide with a perovskite, Brownmillerite, layered oxide, and/or K.sub.4CdCl.sub.6 structure, the elemental composition of the initial oxide being selected to provide suitable conduction properties for the derived anhydrous or hydrated oxyhydroxide or hydrated oxide. A method of making such a solid ionic conducting material, including treatment with water, and an electrochemical device incorporating such a solid ionic conducting material (optionally as an electrolyte) are also disclosed.

The present invention relates to a metal-halide composite, articles comprising a metal-halide composite and method of making and using same. Additionally, they permit the fabrication of plate reinforced composites that are useful in lightweight armor and other articles. Additionally, an optoelectronic composite could be built depending on the choice of metal-halide matrix and reinforcement.
