Silicon compositions containing boron and methods of forming the same
A composition is generally provided that includes a silicon-containing material (e.g., silicon metal and/or a silicide) and a boron-doped refractory compound, such as about 0.001% to about 85% by volume of the boron-doped refractory compound (e.g., about 1% to about 60% by volume). In one embodiment, a bond coating on a surface of a ceramic component is generally provided with the bond coating including such a composition, with the silicon-containing material is silicon metal.

Tantalum carbide coated carbon material, manufacturing method thereof, and member for apparatus for manufacturing semiconductor single crystal
A member for an apparatus for manufacturing a semiconductor single crystal having long product life and a tantalum carbide coated carbon material are provided. The tantalum carbide coated carbon material according to the present invention is a tantalum carbide coated carbon material in which at least a part of a surface of a carbon base material is coated with a tantalum carbide coated film containing tantalum carbide as a main component, in which in the tantalum carbide coated film, an intensity of an X-ray diffraction line corresponding to a plane with respect to an out-of-plane direction is larger than intensities of X-ray diffraction lines corresponding to other crystal planes, and the intensity ratio is 60% or more with respect to a sum of intensities of X-ray diffraction lines corresponding to all crystal planes.
METHODS AND DEVICES FOR ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE ABSORPTION USING GRADIENT, COATED HONEYCOMB STRUCTURES
A device and method for absorbing electromagnetic waves can include a honeycomb sheet formed by a plurality of interconnected hexagon cells arranged in rows. The hexagon cells are made up of sidewalls, each sidewall formed by two surfaces that converge at a top of the sidewall and diverge from the top to a bottom of the sidewall such that a thickness of the sidewalls increases from top to bottom and an angle forms between the two surfaces at the top of the sidewall. In an example, the angle is about 8 degrees. The honeycomb sheet can be coated with a magnetic, composite coating to increase electromagnetic shielding. An example coating includes magnetic multi-granular nanoclusters (MGNC) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). A base layer can be attached to the honeycomb sheet for mechanical stability and additional absorption. The device is suitable for radar absorbing materials (RAM) for aerospace and military applications.
METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR CRACK-FREE DRYING OF HIGH STRENGTH SKIN ON A POROUS CERAMIC BODY
A method and system to dry crack-free and high strength skin including an inorganic binder of an average particle size (D.sub.50) in a range between 10 nm and 700 nm on a porous ceramic body. The method includes supporting the honeycomb body on an end face such that axial channels and outer periphery are substantially vertical. A gas is flowed past the honeycomb body substantially parallel to the axial channel direction, substantially equally around the outer periphery of the skin, to uniformly dry the skin to form a partially dried skin under mild conditions. Then the partially dried skin may be dried more severely resulting in rapidly dried crack-free and high strength skin.
MULTIPHASE COMPOSITIONS FOR OXIDATION PROTECTION OF COMPOSITE ARTICLES
The present disclosure includes carbon-carbon composite articles having multiphase glass oxidation protection coatings for limiting thermal and/or catalytic oxidation reactions and methods for applying multiphase glass oxidation protection coatings to carbon-carbon composite articles.
SiC-COATED CARBON COMPOSITE MATERIAL
Provided is a SiC-coated carbon composite material including a graphite base material and a CVD-SiC coating covering the graphite base material. A porosity of a core part of the graphite base material is 12 to 20%, and a SiC-infiltrated layer extending from the CVD-SiC coating is included in a periphery of the core part of the graphite base material. The SiC-infiltrated layer is constituted of a plurality of regions arranged such that Si content becomes smaller stepwise in an order from a first surface on the CVD-SiC coating side toward a second surface on the graphite base material side.
ION BEAM SPUTTERING WITH ION ASSISTED DEPOSITION FOR COATINGS ON CHAMBER COMPONENTS
An article comprises a body and a conformal protective layer on at least one surface of the body. The conformal protective layer is a plasma resistant rare earth oxide film having a thickness of less than 1000 μm, wherein the plasma resistant rare earth oxide film is selected from a group consisting of an Er—Y composition, an Er—Al—Y composition, an Er—Y—Zr composition, and an Er—Al composition.

The doped CMAS-resistant layer is a thermal barrier coating or an environmental barrier coating and includes a calcia dopant.
METHOD FOR MAKING A PASSIVATING COATING BASED ON ONE OR MORE SILICON COMPOUNDS ON A CERAMIC MATRIX COMPOSITE REINFORCED WITH CARBON FIBRES AND CERAMIC MATRIX COMPOSITE REINFORCED WITH CARBON FIBRES WITH SUCH COATING
A method makes a silicon compound-based passivating coating on a ceramic matrix composite reinforced with carbon fibers. A piece made in a ceramic matrix composite reinforced with carbon fibers is placed in a closed chamber of an oven. A predefined load of solid silicon is placed in the chamber avoiding direct contact between the silicon and the piece. The oven is heated while maintaining inside the chamber predefined medium/low vacuum conditions, to generate silicon vapors inside the chamber. The vapors react with substances on the surface of the piece to form a surface coating having composites of the substances with the silicon. The partial pressure of the vacuum, temperature inside the chamber and exposure times of the piece to the silicon vapors to obtain a predefined thickness of the surface coating are chosen. The piece is cooled once the predefined thickness of the passivating coating is reached.
