A reactive mixture comprising a Fire, Smoke and Toxicity retardant (FST) composition for making a polyisocyanurate and/or polyurethane (PIR/PUR) comprising material, said FST composition comprising: a) at least one compound having at least one ethylenically unsaturated moiety having a number average equivalent weight<160 g/mol, and b) optionally one or more radical initiator compound characterized in that the onset temperature for radical polymerization (T.sub.onset) of the ethylenically unsaturated compound with or without the radical initiator is 2° C. up to 40° C. lower than the maximum reaction temperature achieved during the process for making the PIR/PUR material (reaction exotherm (T.sub.reaction)).

A polyisocyanurate and/or polyurethane (PIR/PUR) comprising material having improved Flame, Smoke and/or Toxicity (FST) retardancy is disclosed and a method for forming said PIR/PUR comprising material. The PIR/PUR material is comprising at least 0.2 wt % of compounds having a number average equivalent weight <160 g/mol and at least one non-polymerized ethylenically unsaturated moiety based on the total weight of the PIR/PUR comprising material, and optionally 0.01 wt % up to 1 wt % of one or more radical initiator compounds based on the total weight of the PIR/PUR comprising material.

POLYOL PREMIXES, THERMALLY INSULATING RIGID POLYURETHANE FOAMS AND METHODS FOR THEIR PRODUCTION

Polyol premixes and thermally insulating rigid polyurethane foams, such as those that can be used as a thermal insulation medium in the construction of refrigerated storage devices, are disclosed. A polymer polyol having a OH number of greater than 260 mg KOH/g is utilized. The resulting polyurethane foams can exhibit improved thermal insulation properties without sacrificing other important physical and processing properties.

A rigid foam having increased flame retardance comprises the reaction product of an isocyanate component and an isocyanate-reactive component. The isocyanate component and an isocyanate-reactive component are reacted in the presence of an isocyanurate catalyst component and a carbodiimide catalyst component. The isocyanurate catalyst component comprises 1,3,5-tris(3-(dimethylamino)propyl)-hexahydro-s-triazine and the carbodiimide catalyst component comprises 3-methyl-1-phenyl-2-phospholene-1-oxide. A method of forming the rigid foam on a surface comprises the steps of providing the isocyanate component, providing the isocyanate-reactive component, providing the isocyanurate catalyst component, providing the carbodiimide catalyst component, and spraying the isocyanate component, isocyanate-reactive component, isocyanurate catalyst component, and carbodiimide catalyst component onto the surface to form the rigid foam on the surface.

A surfactant and a method of forming the surfactant having the formula (I) where a is an integer from 1 to 10, b is an integer from 0 to 10, R.sub.1 is —CH.sub.3 or —H, n is an integer from 0 to 20, and R.sub.2 is a moiety selected from the group consisting of (II), (III), (IV), (V), (VI), (VII) or (VIII) where m is an integer from 0 to 4. The surfactant can be used in a method for preparing a rigid polyurethane foam.
