POLYMETRIC BIOMATERIALS DERIVED FROM PHENOLIC MONOMERS AND THEIR MEDICAL USES
The present invention provides new classes of phenol compounds, including those derived from tyrosol and analogues, useful as monomers for preparation of biocompatible polymers, and biocompatible polymers prepared from these monomeric phenol compounds, including novel biodegradable and/or bioresorbable polymers. These biocompatible polymers or polymer compositions with enhanced bioresorbability and processibility are useful in a variety of medical applications, such as in medical devices and con-trolled-release therapeutic formulations. The invention also provides methods for preparing these monomeric phenol compounds and biocompatible polymers.
Renewable resins and thermoplastics from eugenol
An eugenol, an abundant natural phenol and the primary component of clove oil, which is converted to a thermoset resin via a high yield, two-step reaction. Modest heating yields a thermoset material with thermal stability above 350° C., a glass transition temperature of 187° C. and water uptake of only 1.8%.
Plastic composition comprising a polycarbonate made from low sulfur bisphenol A, and articles made therefrom
In one embodiment, a light emitting device includes a lighting element located in a housing, wherein the housing is formed from a plastic composition including, for example, a polycarbonate formed from reacting, in the presence of a transesterification catalyst, a diaryl carbonate ester and a bisphenol A, wherein the bisphenol A has a sulfur concentration of 1 ppm to 15 ppm, based upon a weight of the bisphenol A; and a conversion material wherein the conversion material includes an inorganic material that converts radiation of a certain wavelength and re-emits of a different wavelength; wherein after the conversion material has been exposed to an excitation source, the conversion material has a luminescence lifetime of less than 10.sup.−4 seconds when the excitation source is removed.

Photocurable composition
Conventionally, a photocurable composition to which an ultraviolet absorber is added is difficult to form a colorless and transparent cured resin because the ultraviolet absorber itself is colored, and thus the photocurable composition is hardly to be used in a display apparatus required for colorlessness and transparency. Provided is a photocurable composition including a specific compound, wherein a light transmittance of 385 nm is 50% or less and a yellowness index is 3.0 or less in a state in which a cured resin having a thickness of 200 μm or less is interposed between alkali free glass plates each having a thickness of 0.7 mm.
