An azo pigment is provided which can be used as a coloring agent, etc. for use in paints, plastics, synthetic fibers, printing inks, and writing materials or for image recording or image displaying and which has performance of exhibiting high near infrared reflection/transparency, particularly when used as a heat-shielding paint, even in the case where the pigment has a dark color, and as a result, colored articles having the above-described properties are provided, and furthermore an article that is also useful as a printing ink in the security field is provided particularly when the pigment has a dark or black color. Specifically, an azo pigment is provided which is obtained through coupling reaction between a particular azo component and a particular coupling component, which has a plurality of chromophores of an azomethine group and of an azo group within a molecule, and in which the diazo component is a diazotized product of 3-(4-aminophenylimino)-1-oxo-4,5,6,7-tetrachroloisoindoline.

A coloring composition includes a metal azo pigment, a compound having an ethylenically unsaturated bonding group, and a solvent, the metal azo pigment includes at least one kind of an anion selected from an azo compound represented by Formula (I) or an azo compound having a tautomeric structure of the azo compound represented by Formula (I), two or more kinds of metal ions, and a melamine compound, and in Formula (I), R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each independently represent OH or NR.sup.5R.sup.6, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 each independently represent ═O or ═NR.sup.7, and R.sup.5 to R.sup.7 each independently represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group. ##STR00001##

There are provided: a near-infrared non-absorbing black azo pigment having a sufficient blackness, having an excellent durability such as solvent resistance, and having a novel skeleton; and a colorant that uses the black azo pigment and is useful for forming a black matrix or a light-shielding film. The black azo pigment is represented by the following formula (1), wherein R.sub.1 represents an aryl group optionally having a substituent. In addition, the colorant contains the black azo pigment and is suitable as a material or the like for forming a black matrix for a color filter or for forming a light-shielding film. ##STR00001##
