Low Temperature Antioxidant Reductant for Copper Nanoparticles
The use of copper materials as a replacement for the more expensive coinage metals (i.e., silver, gold) in printed circuits has come to the forefront. For printing, the use of nanomaterials has allowed for significant advances through the use of nanoinks. Unfortunately, as the nanoregime is entered, the increased surface area leads to increased reactivity with atmospheric oxygen which results in a reduction in the conductivity of the printed circuits. To overcome this issue, a synthesis method uses a room temperature reduction of a copper organometallic precursor by the simple addition of catechol-based surfactants to prevent oxidation and agglomeration of the final copper nanoparticles. The selection of these catechol-based surfactants is based on non-aqueous solubility, high surface affinity, and anti-oxidative potential as surface ligands.

The effect pigments coated according to the invention have at least one endothermic peak with a maximum from a range of T.sub.max=100 to 150° C. and an enthalpy ΔH associated with said peak from a range of 15 J/g to 80 J/g in DSC at a feed speed of 5° C./min, the enthalpy being calculated relative to the amount of the binder. The binders are applied to the effect pigment by way of spontaneous precipitation.
NEAR INFRARED TRANSMITTING COPPER OXIDE NANOPARTICLES
A black IR reflective or transmissive pigment from which LiDAR responsive black coatings can be formed where the pigment displays a Blackness M.sub.y value similar to non-IR reflective carbon black. The CuO particles display small crystallites of less than 18 nm and an (−111)/(111) reflectance intensity ratio of less than 1.2. A method of forming the CuO particles includes precipitation of CuCO3 or CuCO.sub.3/Cu(OH).sub.2 using an alkali carbonate as a precipitant and calcining the precipitate at about 300° C. to about 400° C.
APPARATUS FOR MAKING FLAKES
An apparatus is disclosed for producing flakes, the apparatus comprising: a) a support structure for supporting each of two supply cylinders, made of a first material from which flakes are to be produced, and a fatiguing rod assembly including at least one fatiguing rod made of a second material, each fatiguing rod having a diameter smaller than an initial diameter of the two supply cylinders; b) a compression mechanism for urging the surfaces of the two supply cylinders into contact with each fatiguing rod, and c) a drive mechanism for causing the supply cylinders to rotate while making rolling line contact with each fatiguing rod.
The contact pressure between the supply cylinders and each fatiguing rod is set sufficiently high to modify the surface of the supply cylinders by fatigue and result in separation of flakes of the first material from the surfaces of the supply cylinders.
