PREPARATION OF AN AQUEOUS DISPERSION OF OCCLUDED POLYMER PARTICLES
The present invention relates to a process for preparing an aqueous dispersion of multiphase occluded polymer particles comprising the steps of a) contacting, under emulsion polymerization conditions, first monomers and a chain transfer agent to form an aqueous dispersion of first polymer particles having a T.sub.g in the range of from −30° C. to 30° C.; then b) contacting the aqueous dispersion of first polymer particles with a second monomer under emulsion polymerization conditions to form an aqueous dispersion of second polymer particles occluded within the first polymer particles, wherein the first monomers a phosphorus acid monomer or a salt thereof; and the second monomer comprises at least 90 weight percent methyl methacrylate. The aqueous dispersion of occluded polymer particles arising from the process of the present invention is useful in a formulation that can be used to prepare a water-resistant blister free LASD coating.
Curable compositions for pressure-sensitive adhesives
Curable compositions, cured compositions, articles containing the curable or cured compositions, and methods of making the articles are provided. More particularly, the curable compositions contain a (meth)acrylate-based polymer having pendant (meth)acryloyl groups, at least one monomer having a single ethylenically unsaturated group, a photoinitiator that includes an acyl phosphine oxide, and a thixotropic agent. The curable compositions can be printed or dispensed, if desired, and the cured compositions are pressure-sensitive adhesives.
ACID-CONTAINING POLYMERS AS COALESCING AGENTS FOR LATEXES
Provided herein are aqueous dispersions. The aqueous dispersions can comprise a first copolymer derived from one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers, and a second carboxy-functional copolymer derived from one or more carboxylic acid-containing monomers. The aqueous dispersions can be used to prepare low- or zero-VOC aqueous coating compositions that possess desirable properties, including good block resistance and scrub resistance. Coatings and coating formulations comprising the aqueous dispersion, as well as methods of making and using the same are also provided.
POLYMERIZABLE COMPOSITION AND OPTICALLY ANISOTROPIC BODY USING SAME
The present invention provides a polymerizable composition containing a specific polymerizable compound and a fluorosurfactant having a specific polyoxyalkylene skeleton and having specific molecular weight. The invention also provides an optically anisotropic body, a retardation film, an antireflective film, and a liquid crystal display device that are produced using the polymerizable composition of the present invention. The present invention is useful because, when an optically anisotropic body is produced by photo-polymerization of the polymerizable composition, three features including the leveling properties of the surface of the optically anisotropic body, offset onto the substrate, and liquid crystal alignment can be improved simultaneously.
Acrylic polyester resin and an aqueous coating composition containing the same
There is described an acrylic polyester resin, obtainable by grafting an acrylic polymer with a polyester material. The polyester material is obtainable by polymerizing (i) a polyacid component, with (ii) a polyol component. At least one of the polyacid component and/or the polyol component comprises a monomer having an aliphatic group containing at least 15 carbon atoms. At least one of the polyacid component and/or the polyol component comprises a functional monomer operable to impart functionality on to the polyester resin, such that an acrylic polymer may be grafted with the polyester material via the use of said functionality. Also provided is an aqueous coating composition comprising the acrylic polyester resin and a packaging coated with the composition.
PREPARATION PROCESS FOR SOLID ACRYLIC RESIN SUITABLE FOR UV PHOTOCURING SYSTEM
A preparation process for a solid acrylic resin suitable for a UV curing system is a bulk polymerization method and comprises the steps: adding 100 parts by mass of at least one monofunctional monomer(s) having one polymerizable double bond per molecule, 1-10 parts by mass of one difunctional monomer having two polymerizable double bonds per molecule, 0.1-5.0 parts by mass of an initiator and 1-10 parts by mass of a chain transfer agent to a bulk polymerization reactor capable of water bath heating; homogenizing them by stirring; and then heating the bulk polymerization reactor with a constant temperature water bath at 40-90° C. until the polymerization reaction is completed.
Graft copolymer and soil resistant composition
Provided is a graft copolymer and a treatment method which give excellent antifouling property to a substrate, especially a carpet. The graft copolymer has a trunk polymer having a hydroxyl group; and a branch having a C.sub.7-40 hydrocarbon group bonded to the trunk polymer at a carbon atom substituted with the hydroxyl group, wherein the branch has a repeating unit formed from an acrylic monomer represented by the formula: CH.sub.2═C(—X)—C(═O)—Y.sup.1—Z(—Y.sup.2—R).sub.n. The treatment method include applying the graft copolymer to the substrate.
