A liquid crystal composition includes at least one compound of general formula I, at least one compound of general formula II and at least one compound of general formula III. The liquid crystal composition has a higher optical anisotropy, the relatively large elastic constants K.sub.11 and K.sub.33 while maintaining a relatively high clearing point, an appropriate dielectric anisotropy and a better low-temperature intersolubility. A liquid crystal display device which includes the liquid crystal composition has advantages of a fast response, a high contrast and a wide temperature range, thereby having a good display effect and a large range of applicability. ##STR00001##

There is provided a liquid crystal composition that exhibits a sufficiently low viscosity (η), a sufficiently low rotational viscosity (γ1), and a large elastic modulus (K.sub.33) without decreasing the refractive index anisotropy (Δn) and the nematic phase-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature (T.sub.ni) and without increasing the solid phase-nematic phase transition temperature (T.sub.cn). The liquid crystal display element that uses this liquid crystal composition satisfactorily obtains a pretilt angle and has a high voltage holding ratio (VHR) and high-speed response. Thus, a liquid crystal display element that has no or less alignment defects and display defects such as image sticking, and has high display quality and high response speed is obtained.

A liquid crystal composition includes at least one compound of general Formula I, at least one compound of general Formula II and at least one compound of general Formula M. The present invention further relates to a switching layer, a switching element and a window element containing the liquid-crystalline medium.

The present invention relates to liquid-crystalline media comprising one or more mesogenic compounds, one or more chiral compounds, and one or more polymerisable mesogenic compounds, wherein the media exhibit a pitch of 0.55 μm or more and a clearing point of 80° C. or more and wherein the one or more polymerisable mesogenic compounds are contained in an amount, based on the overall contents of the media, of 5% by weight or less. The present invention further relates to modulation materials obtainable from the media and to switching layers and window elements containing the materials.

The present invention provides a liquid crystal composition comprising one or more compounds of general formula I and one or more compounds of general formula II; the liquid crystal composition of the present invention can work at very high and very low temperatures, has a very short response time and a better reliability to light and heat, and particularly exhibits no image retention or a significantly reduced image retention after a long time operation.
