An object of the present invention is to provide a polymerizable liquid crystal composition used for formation of an optically anisotropic film having excellent moisture-heat resistance and an excellent surface condition, an optically anisotropic film, an optical film, a polarizing plate, and an image display device. The polymerizable liquid crystal composition of an embodiment of the present invention is a polymerizable liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable liquid crystal compound and a compound represented by Formula (1): L.sup.1-SP.sup.1-(E.sup.3-A.sup.1).sub.m-E.sup.1-G.sup.1-C(═O)—O—C(═O)-G.sup.2-E.sup.2-(A.sup.2-E.sup.4).sub.n-SP.sup.2-L.sup.2, in which a content of the compound represented by Formula (1) is 0.01 to 5 parts by mass with respect to 100 parts by mass of the polymerizable liquid crystal compound.

Provided is a liquid crystal composition, which comprises a component prepared from one or more compounds selected from a general formula I; and a component prepared from one or more compounds selected from a general formula II. The liquid crystal composition has the characteristics of low viscosity, high reliability, appropriate optical anisotropy, and appropriate dielectric anisotropy, and is applicable to liquid crystal display devices. ##STR00001##

The present invention provides a liquid crystal composition and a liquid crystal display device thereof. The liquid crystal composition comprises at least one compound of general formula I and at least one compound of general formula II. The liquid crystal composition has a larger vertical dielectric constant (.sub.), a larger ratio of the vertical dielectric constant to the absolute value of dielectric anisotropy (.sub./||), a larger K.sub.ave value and a higher transmittance while maintaining an appropriate clearing point, an appropriate optical anisotropy, and an appropriate absolute value of the dielectric anisotropy, such that the liquid crystal display device comprising the same has a better contrast, a faster response speed and a better transmittance while maintaining an appropriate range of operating temperature and an appropriate threshold voltage.

Disclosed is a liquid crystal composition and use thereof. The liquid crystal composition comprises components a, b and c; wherein component a is selected from one of the compounds represented by formula I; component b is a liquid crystal composition having a dielectric anisotropy of greater than 3; and component c is a liquid crystal composition having a dielectric anisotropy of 3 to 3. The liquid crystal composition has a high contrast ratio property, and has a low change rate at a low temperature, that is, the decrease of contrast ratio at a low temperature (such as 20 C.) is smaller as compared to a normal temperature. The composition has suitable properties with regard to practical applications, including a broader nematic phase range, an appropriate dielectric anisotropy, optical anisotropy and operating voltage, an excellent response time, a high electrical resistivity and voltage holding ratio, a low rotary viscosity, etc. ##STR00001##

A liquid crystal compound represented by general formula F is useful as a liquid crystal composition and as a liquid crystal display device that contains the liquid crystal composition. The liquid crystal compound has a large clearing point, large optical anisotropy and sizable or large dielectric anisotropy absolute value under the condition of maintaining a suitable rotary viscosity, enabling the liquid crystal composition that contains the compound represented by general formula F has a large optical anisotropy, small rotational viscosity, high VHR (UV) and long low-temperature storage duration under the condition of maintaining proper clearing point, proper dielectric anisotropy absolute value and proper VHR (initial), and the liquid crystal display device that contains the liquid crystal composition of the present invention has good contrast, high response speed, high reliability and good low-temperature storage stability.

A liquid crystal compound represented by general formula F is useful as a liquid crystal composition and as a liquid crystal display device that contains the liquid crystal composition. The liquid crystal compound has a large clearing point, large optical anisotropy and sizable or large dielectric anisotropy absolute value under the condition of maintaining a suitable rotary viscosity, enabling the liquid crystal composition that contains the compound represented by general formula F has a large optical anisotropy, small rotational viscosity, high VHR (UV) and long low-temperature storage duration under the condition of maintaining proper clearing point, proper dielectric anisotropy absolute value and proper VHR (initial), and the liquid crystal display device that contains the liquid crystal composition of the present invention has good contrast, high response speed, high reliability and good low-temperature storage stability. ##STR00001##
