Polymeric surfactants for improved emulsion and flow properties at low temperatures

A polymer surfactant for improving engine oil emulsion properties of a lubricating composition mixed with water and/or fuel contamination, particularly at very cold temperatures, is described herein. In approaches, selected polymeric and functionalized compounds can impart both robust emulsion properties and simultaneously deliver good low temperature fluidity for lubricating compositions that may contain residual amounts of water and/or fuel contamination. Lubricating compositions including such surfactants demonstrate robust properties at temperatures down to about −30° C.

HYDRAULIC FLUIDS IN PLASTIC INJECTION MOLDING PROCESSES

The present invention relates to the use of hydraulic fluids in plastic injection molding processes. Thereby it was surprisingly found that the use of hydraulic fluids with the right combination of physical parameters like the viscosity grade, the viscosity index, the density and the dispersancy allows for significant energy savings in plastic injection molding processes (PIM). The PIM process is an industrial process to manufacture plastic parts at well controlled temperatures, pressures and cycle times. The energy consumption of the process became more important over the last years, however, other parameters like process stability and accuracy of plastic part parameters as well as machine protection and long oil drain intervals have to be satisfying.

Low-friction and low-adhesion materials and coatings

Disclosed are materials that possess both low adhesion and the ability to absorb water. The material passively absorbs water from the atmosphere and then expels this water upon impact with debris, to create a self-cleaning layer. The lubrication reduces friction and surface adhesion of the debris (such as an insect), which may then slide off the surface. The invention provides a material comprising a continuous matrix including a polymer having a low surface energy (less than 50 mJ/m.sup.2) and a plurality of inclusions, dispersed within the matrix, each comprising a hygroscopic material. The continuous matrix and the inclusions form a lubricating surface layer in the presence of humidity. The material optionally contains porous nanostructures that inject water back onto the surface after an impact, absorbing water under pressure and then releasing water when the pressure is removed. The material may be a coating or a surface, for example.
