The invention relates to aqueous composition comprising water-soluble glycerin-based polyalkylene glycols as synthetic base oils as well as the use of the composition and the glycerin-based polyalkylene glycols as or in metalworking fluids, wherein the glycerin was consecutively alkoxylated in the following order: first with propylene oxide, followed by ethylene oxide and finally with propylene oxide.

The present invention provides a non-aqueous lubricant composition comprising a base stock and 5 at least 0.02 wt % of a friction reducing additive which comprises a block co-polymer of at least one block A which is an oligo- or polyester residue of a hydroxycarboxylic acid and at least one block B which is a residue of a polyalkylene glycol. The invention also provides the use of a block co-polymer of at least one block A which is an oligo- or polyester residue of a hydroxycarboxylic acid and at least one block B which is a residue of a polyalkylene glycol to reduce the kinetic co-efficient 10 of friction in a non-aqueous lubricant composition when compared to an equivalent lubricant composition comprising no block co-polymer.

(A) is 1-20 mass %, (B) is 30-60 mass %, and (C) is 35-55 mass %, based on the total amount of the components (A), (B) and (C). The water-soluble metalworking fluid composition maintains the workability while improving the mechanical fouling.

The water-soluble working fluid is provided by blending water, alkylene oxide adduct of acethylene glycol, and glycols. The water-soluble working fluid of the invention is capable of providing favorable cutting accuracy when the brittle material is cut using a wire, and thus is suitable for cutting out a large-diameter wafer. The water-soluble working fluid of the invention is especially suitably applicable to an abrasive-grain-fixed wire saw.
