Bioreactor insert and biofilm support, related apparatus and related methods

The disclosure relates to bioreactors, for example for biological treatment and, more specifically to bioreactor insert apparatus including biofilms and related methods. The bioreactor insert apparatus provides a means for circulation of reaction medium within the bioreactor, a biofilm support, and biological treatment of an inlet feed to the reactor/insert apparatus. The bioreactor insert apparatus has a high relative surface area for biofilm attachment and is capable of generating complex flow patterns and increasing treatment efficiency/biological conversion activity in a biologically-active reactor. The high surface area structure incorporates multiple biofilm support structures such as meshes at inlet and outlet portions of the structure. The biofilm support structures and biofilms thereon can increase overall reaction rate of the bioreactor and/or perform some solid/liquid separation in the treatment of the wastewater or other influent.

SCALABLE BIOREACTOR SYSTEMS AND RELATED METHODS OF USE

Bioreactors configured to scale-up the production of greater quantities of cells at relatively low cost are provided. These bioreactors may be utilized in the production of large-scale quantities of cell-based meat and cell-based fat. The bioreactors may be reusable and may have a high surface area-to-volume ratio for adherent cell expansion. The bioreactors may be capable of yielding a large number of adherent cells per bioreactor unit.

Disclosed is a device for angling a multi-well plate during shaking on a typical low speed laboratory incubator-shaker to facilitate cell growth. An assembly with a holder for a deep-well multi-well plate to attach it to a base has an adjustable-angle joint. The base is attached to a conventional incubator shaker tray via screws or a sticky pad. The adjustable-angle joint allows maintaining the desired angle of the plate, even at full shaking speed.

An apparatus and method for producing a bacterial cellulose composite having a core-shell structure by dynamic fermentation are described. The apparatus comprises a fermentation culture container and two rollers and two heating guide plates arranged in the fermentation culture container. The apparatus can realize dynamic fermentation and coating, and can obtain a bacterial cellulose composite material with controllable shape and size, good biocompatibility and safety.

Cell growth with mechanical stimuli

Embodiments for loading and expanding particular cell types are described. Embodiments may include the use of hollow fiber membranes with particular characteristic such as hollow fibers with inner diameters that provide mechanical stimulus (e.g., radius of curvature greater than a dimension of a cell). In addition, embodiments may provide for manipulation of flow rates and other features that also provide mechanical stimuli and promote or enhance the growth of particular types of cells.

BIOREACTOR INSERT AND BIOFILM SUPPORT, RELATED APPARATUS AND RELATED METHODS

The disclosure relates to bioreactors, for example for biological treatment and, more specifically to bioreactor insert apparatus including biofilms and related methods. The bioreactor insert apparatus provides a means for circulation of reaction medium within the bioreactor, a biofilm support, and biological treatment of an inlet feed to die reactor/insert apparatus. Apparatus for holding down respective membrane elements in respective wells of a multiwell plate

An apparatus is provided for holding down membrane elements in respective wells of a multiwell plate, which has, at its top side, respective openings of the respective wells. The apparatus has, at its upper region, a support structure having respective openings, and respective corresponding retention elements which extend downwards from the respective openings of the support structure, so that respective retention elements protrude into respective wells when the support structure has been placed onto the top side of the multiwell plate. A retention element has multiple webs which extend downwards from the support structure and the ends of which are connected to one another at a bottom side of the apparatus by means of a connection element. Furthermore, a retention element has multiple openings between the webs, which openings extend continuously from the support structure right up to the connection element and which openings furthermore extend continuously from the top side of the multiwell plate right up to the connection element when the support structure has been placed onto the top side of the multiwell plate.

SUPPORT COIL

A support coil comprises a sheet wound up in a spiral, and a side wall arranged along a longitudinal edge of the sheet, so the side wall remains arranged between successive turns of the coil, and an inner spiral space is defined between the turns and is partly limited by the side wall, wherein the side wall comprises a continuous strip and a discontinuous strip. Also provided are reactors which use such a support coil arranged inside a container such as to be rotatable and cause a flow of liquid along the wound up sheet, from the outside towards the inside of the spiral, as well as methods for producing and operating such reactors for a variety of purposes.
