A method of manufacturing an extruded material of carbon nanotube reinforced aluminum matrix composite having improved corrosion resistance, and the extruded material manufactured thereby are proposed. The method may include manufacturing an extruded material comprising an aluminum-carbon nanotube composite material and forming a hard oxide film on the surface of the extruded material by anodizing the extruded material in a mixed solution of sulfuric acid and oxalic acid. The method can form a hard oxide film with excellent corrosion resistance, abrasion resistance, and insulation properties on the surface of a composite material (an extruded material of carbon nanotube reinforced aluminum matrix composite material), which is known to be difficult to conduct hard anodizing due to the difference in corrosion characteristics between materials and, accordingly, the usability of the composite material can be significantly improved.

A component for a gas turbine engine can be made via additive manufacturing. During the additive manufacturing process a powder can be used that comprises a superalloy material (12) and carbon nanostructures (14a, 14b). Components made using the powder can have preferred characteristics at certain locations through the use of the carbon nanostructure based additive manufacturing powder.

Selective laser sintering using functional inclusions dispersed in the matrix material being created

A selective laser sintering system includes a leveling roller having a first orientation. The leveling roller is configured to roll over a first feed bin. The build chamber is configured to receive, from the first feed bin and by the leveling roller, a transfer of a portion of matrix material. The selective laser sintering system is configured to transfer the portion to the build chamber in a number of orientations.

Metal nanoparticle-decorated nanotubes for gas sensing

Disclosed herein are methods of producing metal nanoparticle-decorated carbon nanotubes. The methods include forming a reaction mixture by combining a first solution with a second solution, wherein the first solution comprises polymer-coated metal nanoparticles comprising metallic nanoparticles coated with a polymer, and wherein the second solution comprises carbon nanotubes. The methods also include heating the reaction mixture to a temperature greater than a glass transition temperature of the polymer for a time sufficient to cause the polymer-coated metal nanoparticles to bind to the carbon nanotubes forming the metal nanoparticle-decorated carbon nanotubes.

Method of manufacturing aluminum alloy clad section, and aluminum alloy clad section produced by same method

Disclosed are a method of manufacturing an aluminum alloy clad section, and an aluminum alloy clad section manufactured by the method. The method includes preparing a composite powder by ball-milling aluminum powder and carbon nanotubes, preparing a billet from the composite powder, and subjecting the billet to direct extrusion using an extrusion die. The method is simple in procedure and uses simple equipment because it is based on direct extrusion which is suitable for mass production. Thus, the method is capable of producing a lightweight high-strength functional aluminum alloy clad section having a competitive advantage in terms of price over conventional aluminum alloy clad sections.

Iridium alloy catalyst having reversible catalytic activity and preparation method thereof

Proposed is an iridium alloy catalyst having reversible catalytic activity for an oxygen evolution reaction (OER), a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and a hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) by including an iridium alloy including iridium (Ir) and nickel (Ni). The iridium alloy catalyst according to the present disclosure is rapidly converted to an iridium alloy catalyst in an oxide form and an iridium alloy catalyst in a metallic form according to applied voltage by controlling its crystallinity. Thus, even in case an oxide layer is formed after the OER, the oxidation layer disappears during the HER and HOR and the properties of an iridium metal catalyst remain, thereby maintaining HER/HOR performance.
