TEXTURED METAL SUBSTRATES FOR NEGATIVE ELECTRODES OF LITHIUM METAL BATTERIES AND METHODS OF MAKING THE SAME
A lithium metal negative electrode for an electrochemical cell for a secondary lithium metal battery includes a polycrystalline metal substrate having a major facing surface with a defined crystallographic texture. An epitaxial lithium metal layer is formed on the major facing surface of the polycrystalline metal substrate. The epitaxial lithium metal layer exhibits a predominant crystal orientation. The predominant crystal orientation of the epitaxial lithium metal layer is derived from the defined crystallographic texture of the major facing surface of the polycrystalline metal substrate.
Devices and methods for electrochemical liquid phase epitaxy
Electrochemical liquid phase epitaxy (ec-LPE) processes and devices are provided that can form precipitated epitaxial crystalline films or layers on a substrate. The precipitated films may comprise a semiconductor, such as germanium, silicon, or carbon. Dissolution into, saturation within, and precipitation of the semiconductor from a liquid metal electrode (e.g., Hg pool) near an interface region with a substrate yields a polycrystalline semiconductor material deposited as an epitaxial film. Reactor cells for use in an electrochemical liquid phase epitaxy (ec-LPE) device are also provided that include porous membranes to facilitate formation of the precipitated epitaxial crystalline films.
Self-aligned tunable metamaterials
A self-aligned tunable metamaterial is formed as a wire mesh. Self-aligned channel grids are formed in layers in a silicon substrate using deep trench formation and a high-temperature anneal. Vertical wells at the channels may also be etched. This may result in a three-dimensional mesh grid of metal and other material. In another embodiment, metallic beads are deposited at each intersection of the mesh grid, the grid is encased in a rigid medium, and the mesh grid is removed to form an artificial nanocrystal.

SLIDING MEMBER AND SLIDING BEARING
A sliding member includes a base layer that includes soft particles made of a soft material deposited in a matrix and a soft layer made of a soft material. The soft material is softer than the matrix, the soft layer is formed on a surface of the base layer, and an average epitaxial index of the soft particles at the boundary portion of the sliding member is equal to or greater than 70% and less than or equal to 100%. The epitaxial index of a soft particle at the boundary portion is a ratio of: a portion of a length between a first endpoint and a second endpoint of a soft particle where an edge of the boundary portion is not visible within an area less than 1 m from the length between the first endpoint and the second endpoint, to the length between the first endpoint and the second endpoint.
