The sewing machine is provided with an upper feed lower shaft 1 which is supported rotatably on a machine main body and is coupled to the lower feed drive mechanism, an upper feed coupling section which transmits movement of the upper feed lower shaft to the upper feed shaft, and a transmission control section which controls halting and restarting of transmission of movement of the upper feed lower shaft. The upper feed coupling section is held at a movement transmission halt position by operation of the transmission control section.
