HOMOGENEOUS COMPOSITE MICROSTRUCTURE
A method of preparing a woven ceramic fabric for use in a ceramic matrix composite includes transforming a woven fabric sheet having a first tow architecture into a separated woven fabric sheet having a second tow architecture, the first tow architecture including a plurality of warp tows and a plurality of weft tows, and the second tow architecture including a plurality of warp subtows and/or a plurality of weft subtows. Transforming the woven fabric sheet includes separating at least some of the plurality of warp tows and/or the plurality of weft tows into a greater number of corresponding warp subtows and/or weft subtows, respectively, such that second tow architecture includes more warp subtows and/or weft subtows than the first tow architecture comprises warp tows and weft tows, and wherein each of the warp subtows and/or weft subtows includes fewer filaments than corresponding warp tow and/or weft tow. Each of the plurality of warp subtows and/or weft subtows is spaced apart from the closest adjacent warp subtow and/or weft subtow, respectively, a distance of 25 to 230 microns.
Metal matrix composite tape fabrication, braiding, and consolidation to form metal matrix composite parts
Systems and methods are provided for braiding Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) tape. One method includes drawing multiple lanes of MMC tape, comprising a matrix of metal reinforced by fibers, from bobbins arranged around a mandrel. The method also includes braiding the multiple lanes to form a preform at the mandrel for an MMC part and consolidating the preform via application of heat and pressure.
METHOD FOR PRODUCING CERAMIC MULTILAYERED TUBE USED AS CLADDING FOR FUEL ELEMENT IN NUCLEAR POWER PLANT
The method includes forming an inner monolithic layer from crystals of beta phase stoichiometric silicon carbide on a carbon substrate in the form of a rod by chemical methylsilane vapor deposition in a sealed tubular hot-wall CVD reactor. The method further includes forming a central composite layer over the inner monolithic layer by twisting continuous beta phase stoichiometric silicon carbide fibers into tows, transporting the tows to a braiding machine, and forming a reinforcing thread framework. A pyrocarbon interface coating is built up by chemical methane vapor deposition in a sealed tubular hot-wall CVD reactor. Then, a matrix is formed by chemical methylsilane vapor deposition in the reactor. A protective outer monolithic layer is formed from crystals of beta phase stoichiometric silicon carbide over the central composite layer by chemical methylsilane vapor deposition in a CVD reactor. And then the carbon substrate is removed from the fabricated semi-finished product.
SILICON CARBIDE MATRIX COMPOSITE MATERIAL
SiC matrix composite material, where heat-resistant long fiber such as carbon fiber is employed as a material for reinforcement and SiC is employed for the matrix, which significantly improves mechanical properties such as strength and toughness. The SiC matrix composite material, includes a SiC matrix and heat-resistant long fiber, wherein the SiC matrix includes both of alpha-type SiC and beta-type SiC, and the alpha-type SiC and the beta-type SiC are detected by micro-region X-ray diffraction with an X-ray beam diameter of no greater than 300 micrometers substantially at every region of every cross-section of the SiC matrix, the beta-type SiC has an average crystallite size that is no greater than 500 nm and greater than an average crystallite size of the alpha-type SiC, and the SiC matrix composite material has a porosity of no greater than 20% by volume.
GRADIENT TOW RIBBONIZING FOR CHEMICAL VAPOR INFILTRATION CERAMIC MATRIX COMPOSITES
A method of preparing a ceramic fabric and ceramic matrix composite components constructed from the ceramic fabric include transforming ceramic tows, or ceramic fabrics, to varying degrees from a first tow geometry to a second tow geometry, thereby reducing a first dimension of the ceramic tows and increasing a second dimension of the ceramic tows orthogonal to the first dimension. Plies constructed with flattened tows, or as-received tows, have various inter-tow pore sizes that are arranged with increasing inter-tow pore size towards exterior surfaces of the preform structure.
Reinforcing fiber structure for composite material parts with great variation of thickness
A fiber structure includes a plurality of weft layers and a plurality of warp layers interlinked with three-dimensional or multilayer weaving, the fiber structure including at least first and second portions that are adjacent in the warp direction, the first portion presenting thickness in a direction perpendicular to the warp and weft directions that is greater than the thickness of the second portion. The weft layers situated in the core of the first portion of the fiber structure include braids. The weft layers extending on either side of the weft layers including the braids and going as far as the skin of the first portion include yarns or strands, the braids presenting a section greater than the section of the yarns or strands.
Flexible translucent to transparent fireproof composite material
A fireproof, translucent, flexible coated fabric composite material for use in fire curtains. The composite material meets or exceeds regulatory requirements in terms of fire endurance and allows transmissivity of necessary amounts of light. The process of the present disclosure combines a silica fabric with a special refractory index controlled resin. This unique combination of materials can transform an opaque high temperature fabric into a translucent, and even transparent, composite which as the ability to resist high temperature, flame and smoke penetration that fills a needed gap in technology between visibility and fire resistance in the field of fire and smoke curtains used in civil construction.
