Methods and compositions for asphalt rejuvenation

Roadway resurfacing often requires removal of the existing asphalt from the roadway for reuse. One method of resurfacing a roadway is hot-in-place recycling. Hot-in-place recycling employs substantial heat to remove the oxidized or aged asphalt. This heat further oxidizes the asphalt, creating a material that lacks many desirable properties (e.g., flowability) and flexibility. The disclosure provides compositions and methods that enhance oxidized asphalt, making it more viable for use in resurfacing roadways. Accordingly, compositions comprising recycled asphalt pavement and a rejuvenating agent are disclosed. The compositions combine a rejuvenator and fresh asphalt flux to make a modified asphalt rejuvenator. The modified rejuvenator is then mixed with recycled asphalt pavement to form a rejuvenated asphalt composition.

An object of the present invention is to provide a method for constructing a base course without rolling compaction, in which a compacting step by rolling compaction and further adjustment of the water content of the mixture to the optimum water content are not necessary, and to provide a mixture for base course, which enables the said method. The above object is attained by providing a method for constructing a base course without rolling compaction, which comprises a step of obtaining a mixture by mixing an aggregate, an asphalt emulsion, and a cement, wherein the mixture is in a high-water-content state in which a water content of the mixture is above an optimum water content of the aggregate, and a step of spreading the mixture; and which does not comprise a step of rolling compaction, and by providing a mixture for a base course, comprising an aggregate, an asphalt emulsion, and a cement, wherein the mixture is in a high-water-content state in which a water content of the mixture is above an optimum water content of the aggregate.

Portable asphalt heater apparatus and method

A portable asphalt heater and method for heating asphalt includes an asphalt hopper having a floor, first and second side walls and front and rear end walls. The side walls taper inwardly to define a substantially inverted-V geometry of the hopper. A heating manifold including a heating chamber is adjacent to and positioned beneath the floor, the heating manifold adapted to be in fluid communication with a heater assembly and to direct a heated gas emitted from the heater assembly through the heating chamber and heating manifold. A plurality of chimneys is in fluid communication with, and extends from, the heating chamber and along the first and second side walls, wherein the volume of asphalt, when in the asphalt hopper, is heated through contact with the asphalt hopper.

A mobile apparatus for the repair of potholes in an asphalt paved surface comprises first storage bin for the containment of recycled shingle particles or recycled asphalt or combinations thereof. A first conveyor is provided for conveying the particles from the first storage bin to an inlet of a radiant heated transport mixing conveyor. A second storage bin is provided for the containment of stone aggregate. A second conveyor conveys and pre-heats the stone aggregate to the inlet of the transport mixing conveyor. An oil reservoir has a pump at an outlet thereof for feeding a predetermined quantity of asphaltic oil at the inlet of the mixing conveyor. The mixing conveyor has vanes for displacing, mixing and heating the stone aggregate, the recycled asphalt particles or recycled asphalt and the asphaltic oil to produce an asphalt patch material and feeding same to a dispensing outlet.
