Optimization of drilling operations using drilling cones
Drilling operations may be monitored to detect and quantify potential drilling dysfunctions. Using a Bayesian network, potential improvements to drilling operation may be made depending upon the type of dysfunction detected. Suggestions for improved drilling performance may comprise increasing, decreasing, or maintaining one or both of RPM and weight on bit. Suggestions may be presented to an operator as a cone having an apex at the current RPM and weight on bit drilling parameters, with suggestions for modifications to one or both of the RPM and weight on bit corresponding to a cone extending from that apex.

Downhole motor stall detection
A drilling system includes a drill string, a plurality of sensors, and a computing system. The drill string includes a downhole motor. The sensors are coupled to the drill string. The computing system is coupled to the sensors. The computing system is configured to compute, based on measurements provided by the sensors, a motor stall index, and to determine, by comparing the motor stall index to a motor stall threshold, whether the downhole motor has stalled. The computing system is also configured to, responsive to a determination that the downhole motor has stalled, adjust operation of the drill string to restart the downhole motor.
CALCULATING PULL FOR A STUCK DRILL STRING
The disclosure presents processes and methods for determining an overpull force for a stuck drill string in a borehole system. The fluid composition of a mud in the borehole at a specified depth can be broken down into a percentage of liquid and percentage of solids, as well as adjusting for material sag and settling factors. The fluid composition can be utilized to identify friction factors and drag in respective fluid composition zones. Each friction factor and drag can be summed to determine a total fluid drag on the drill string. In some aspects, the total fluid drag can be adjusted utilizing the relative positioning of casing collars and tool joints. The total fluid drag can be summed with the other force factors, such as a shear force and mechanical drag. The total drag can then be utilized as the overpull force applied to the stuck drill string.
