MONITORING DRILLING VIBRATIONS BASED ON ROTATIONAL SPEED
20230010614 · 2023-01-12 ·

The disclosure provides a solution for monitoring stick-slip vibrations without using any surface torque measurements. Instead, the disclosure provides a method to monitor stick-slip vibrations based on rotational speed. A stick-slip monitor, a top drive controller and a method of operating a drill string are provided herein that use rotational speed for monitoring stick-slip vibrations. In one example, the method of operating a drill string includes: (1) performing a frequency domain analysis of an RPM signal associated with a top drive that is used to rotate a drill string, and (2) determining a presence of torsional oscillations of the drill string based on the frequency domain analysis of the RPM signal.

IMPROVED ESTIMATION OF WELLBORE DOGLEG FROM TOOL BENDING MOMENT MEASUREMENTS
20180003031 · 2018-01-04 · ·

A disclosed borehole curvature logging system includes: a drill string having a bottomhole assembly (BHA) with sensors providing actual deformation and bending moment measurements as a function of BHA position at spaced-apart intervals on the BHA; a processing system that retrieves said actual measurements and responsively generates a log of borehole curvature; and a user interface that displays the borehole curvature log. The processing system implements a method that generates the log by: providing an estimated borehole trajectory; deriving predicted deformation and bending moment measurements based on the estimated borehole trajectory; determining an error between the predicted measurements and the actual measurements; updating the estimated borehole trajectory to reduce the error; repeating said deriving, determining, and updating to refine the estimated borehole trajectory; and converting the estimated borehole trajectory into a borehole curvature log.

Method and a System for Determining Slip Status of a Drill String
20180003024 · 2018-01-04 · ·

The present disclosure relates to a method and a system for determining slip status of a drill string. The monitoring and control system is configured to obtain a hook load data at predetermined time intervals, and determine variation of hook load between the predetermined time intervals using the hook load data obtained. The monitoring and control system further determines a slip status of the drill string corresponding to each of the variation of hook load. The slip status is determined by comparing each of the variation of hook load with a threshold value of noise. The threshold value of noise is determined based on predetermined parameters of the drill string. The method and system of present disclosure accurately determines the slip status of the drill string, thereby improves operational efficiency of the drill rig.

SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR MEASURING BENDING, WEIGHT ON BIT AND TORQUE ON BIT WHILE DRILLING
20180003030 · 2018-01-04 ·

An apparatus for determining torque on bit and bending forces in a drilling assembly. The apparatus includes a body having an inner bore defined by an inner wall and having an outer wall, the body also including first and second light bores disposed between the inner wall and the outer wall and a light emitting assembly arranged and configured to cause a light beam to enter the first and second light bores. The assembly further includes first and second light sensors disposed in or at an end of the first and second light bores, respectively, that measure a location where light that enters the first and second light bores contacts the sensors

COMPONENT FOR ROCK BREAKING SYSTEM
20180010439 · 2018-01-11 ·

A component for a rock breaking system is magnetized into a state of remanent magnetization. The remanent magnetization of the component has a predetermined varying magnetization profile relative to geometry of the component, the varying magnetization profile describing varying magnetization intensity in the component relative to the geometry of the component.

A communication unit is situated in or on a casing collar. The casing collar has two threaded ends for joining casing joints to construct a well casing, and a communication unit is disposed in or on a central region of the tube between the two threaded ends. In an example, the communication unit has a transmitter for transmitting sensor data uphole from a sensor sensing a well bore condition. For example, the communication unit has a receiver for receiving sensor data from Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) sensors, a transceiver for interrogating RFID tags, an acoustic transceiver for sensing wellbore conditions, a pressure sensor, a temperature sensor, and batteries for powering the communication unit.
