A pollution control system for a diesel engine includes a PCV valve and an associated vacuum pump having an inlet and an outlet adapted to vent blow-by gas out from a crankcase to an intake manifold on the diesel engine. The vacuum pump associated with the PCV valve selectively modulates vacuum pressure to adjustably increase or decrease a fluid flow rate of blow-by gas venting from the crankcase through the PCV valve.

VENTILATION APPARATUS OF INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE

A ventilation apparatus of an internal combustion engine of the invention ventilates a chain chamber by recirculating blow-by gas to an intake passage through a blow-by gas recirculation pipe and introducing air into the chain chamber through an air introduction pipe. The air introduction pipe is secured to a head cover wall portion which corresponds to a portion of a head cover wall which defines the chain chamber.

System for Reverse Crankcase Ventilation During Boosted Engine Operation

Positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) systems have been employed on naturally-aspirated engines for over half a century. The gases in the crankcase exit the engine into the engine intake due to the slightly elevated pressure in the crankcase. Flow is controlled via a PCV valve in a PCV duct. In pressure-charged engines, PCV flow stops when pressure in the intake exceeds that of the crankcase. Such stagnation leads to sludging and deposit formation. According to an embodiment of the disclosure, reverse flow through the system is allowed by installing a second PCV valve in parallel with the normally-provided PCV valve, with the second PCV valve allowing an opposite direction of flow. Oil separators are provided on both PCV ducts to and from the engine to remove oil from blowby gases for flow in either direction.

Closed breather disconnection detection method

Disclosed is a method for detecting disconnection of a closed breather 18 separating and recovering oil mist from blow-by gas 17 extracted from an engine 1 to return the blow-by gas through a gas return pipe 19 to an intake pipe 5. Under condition of no exhaust gas 9 recirculation being conducted, a mass flow rate of in-cylinder working gas is calculated based on a boost pressure, an intake temperature of an intake manifold 7 and a rotational frequency of the engine, and whether the calculated mass flow rate is divergent from a value detected by an air flow sensor 24 is determined. When determined to be divergent, the divergence in a last determination is compared with a current divergence; if difference between the divergences is beyond a predetermined range, the gas return pipe 19 is determined to be in disconnection from the intake pipe 5.
