The device (8) has a first thermal expansion element (31) providing a first stroke of a valve body (16, 20, 34, 44) in response to the temperature of the coolant in a the pilot chamber (14a), and a second thermal expansion element (32) providing a second stroke of the valve body (16, 20, 34, 44) in response to the temperature of the coolant in the thermostat chamber (15a) such that the valve body (16, 20, 34, 44) is moved to a position defined by the strokes from the thermal expansion elements (31, 32). The pilot chamber (14a) has an outlet passage (14b) for directing coolant from the pilot chamber (14a) to the thermostat chamber (15a).

A retarder is configured to be coupled to a pair of wheels of the vehicle. The second water recirculation loop may be selectively used for cooling the propulsion device and for providing water to the retarder for water braking. There is also provided a method for cooling a propulsion device of a vehicle and water braking a pair of wheels of a vehicle.

The coolant diverter system includes a coolant diverter body having a coolant inlet opening, a driveline retarder outlet opening and a bypass outlet opening. The coolant diverter system also includes a valve positioned in the coolant diverter body. The valve is configured in a first valve orientation to fluidly couple the coolant inlet opening to the driveline retarder outlet opening in isolation from the bypass outlet opening. The valve is configured in a second valve orientation to fluidly couple the coolant inlet opening to the driveline retarder outlet opening and the bypass outlet opening. The coolant diverter system also includes a valve controller configured to place the valve in the first valve orientation in response to activation of a driveline retarder coupled to the driveline retarder outlet opening for braking.

The present invention relates to a method for controlling a vehicle in association with a descent, the vehicle having a powertrain comprising: a drive unit configured to provide propulsion power; an auxiliary brake device; and a first cooling circuit comprising a first coolant; wherein the drive unit and the auxiliary brake device are arranged to be selectively connected or disconnected with/from the first cooling circuit, wherein the drive unit has a first maximum temperature and the auxiliary brake device has a second maximum temperature higher than the first maximum temperature, the method comprising: controlling the drive unit to reduce the provided propulsion power when the vehicle is approaching an upcoming descent, which fulfils predetermined criteria; disconnecting the drive unit from the first cooling circuit; connecting the auxiliary brake device with the first cooling circuit; and controlling the auxiliary brake device to brake to vehicle down the descent.
