Apparatus and method for igniting a gaseous fuel in a direct injection internal combustion engine

An apparatus and method for igniting a gaseous fuel directly introduced into a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine comprises steps of heating a space near a fuel injector nozzle; introducing a pilot amount of the gaseous fuel in the combustion chamber during a first stage injection event; controlling residency of the pilot amount in the space such that a temperature of the pilot amount increases to an auto-ignition temperature of the gaseous fuel whereby ignition occurs; introducing a main amount of the gaseous fuel during a second stage injection event after the first stage injection event; and using heat from combustion of the pilot amount to ignite the main amount.

An internal combustion engine includes a fuel injection nozzle in which a nozzle hole that injects fuel is provided to be exposed to a combustion chamber from a cylinder head of the internal combustion engine, and a hollow duct in which an inlet and an outlet are exposed to the combustion chamber. The duct is provided to penetrate through an inside of the cylinder head so that fuel spray injected from the nozzle hole of the fuel injection nozzle passes from the inlet to the outlet. The duct is preferably configured so that a direction from the inlet to the outlet corresponds to a direction of the fuel spray injected from the nozzle hole.

Compression-ignition internal combustion engine

A compression-ignition internal combustion engine includes a fuel injection nozzle including a tip end portion exposed in a combustion chamber and a nozzle hole formed at the tip end portion; and a passage forming member forming a flow guide passage through which fuel injected from the nozzle hole passes. The passage forming member includes a passage wall portion located radially outward of the flow guide passage. The passage wall portion includes a first layer that is a base portion connected to a cylinder head, and a second layer located radially outward or radially inward of the first layer. The toughness of the first layer is higher than the toughness of the second layer. The thermal conductivity of the second layer is lower than the thermal conductivity of the first layer.

Engine mixing structures

A fuel and gas mixing structure for an engine is provided. This mixing structure includes a body configured to be positioned between a fuel injector and a cylinder of an engine. The body defines an interior volume that is configured to receive gas from outside the body and to receive one or more streams of fuel from the fuel injector in the interior volume. The body also defines one or more mixture conduits configured to conduct plumes of the fuel and gas, while mixing, from the interior volume to one or more exit ports and therethrough to the cylinder.

Ducted fuel injection

Various technologies presented herein relate to heating a fuel and enhancing fuel and charge-gas mixing inside a combustion chamber to enable minimal, or no, generation of soot and/or other undesired emissions during ignition and subsequent combustion of the locally premixed mixtures. To enable sufficient mixing of the fuel and charge-gas, a jet of fuel can be directed to pass through a bore of a duct causing charge-gas to be drawn into the bore creating turbulence to mix the fuel and the drawn charge-gas. The duct can be heated to provision heating of the fuel and charge-gas mixture. The duct can be located proximate to an opening in a tip of a fuel injector. An ignition assist component can be located downstream of the duct to facilitate ignition of the fuel/charge-gas mixture.
