Controller and control method for internal combustion engine

A controller is configured to perform a process of obtaining an exhaust pressure upstream of a filter inside an exhaust passage and an intake air amount detected by an air flowmeter, when the filter in which a deposition amount of particulate matter is a specified amount is referred to as a reference filter, a calculation process of calculating an exhaust pressure rate that indicates a ratio of the obtained exhaust pressure to an exhaust pressure at the reference filter for the obtained intake air amount, and a setting process of setting the exhaust pressure rate that is maintained at a specific value during engine operation.

Engine

An engine including an exhaust bypass valve and an intake bypass valve. The exhaust bypass valve is disposed in an exhaust bypass channel connecting an outlet of an exhaust manifold and an exhaust outlet of a turbocharger to each other. The intake bypass valve is disposed in an intake bypass channel connecting an inlet of an intake manifold and an inlet of the turbocharger. An intake pressure sensor detects a pressure of the intake manifold. If an instruction value indicating an upper limit or a lower limit of the valve opening degree of the intake bypass valve is continuously output for a predetermined time or more, an engine control device determines that an abnormality occurs in at least one of the exhaust bypass valve and the intake bypass valve.

Internal combustion engine and method to increase the temperature of a liquid in the internal combustion engine

A method, controller, and internal combustion engine including the controller and operable in accordance with the method by: determining a temperature of a working liquid in an engine block circuit (31, 35) of the internal combustion engine (10), the working liquid comprising a cooling liquid or a lubrication liquid; operating the internal combustion engine (10); engaging a thermal load responsive to the temperature of the liquid being below a first temperature threshold, wherein engaging the thermal load comprises at least one of increasing a pumping load of the internal combustion engine (10), or changing an air/fuel ratio, thereby adding heat to the engine block circuit (31, 35); controlling the thermal load as a function of the temperature of the liquid; and disengaging at least a portion of the thermal load responsive to the temperature of the liquid being above the low temperature limit.

Annular disk for turbocharger speed control

An annular disk comprises a front surface, a rear surface, an outer surface, and an inner surface. The front surface has a front opening within a front plane. The rear surface has a rear opening within a rear plane. The rear opening, which has a diameter that is smaller than a diameter of the front opening, communicates with the front opening to define a bore for guiding an exhaust stream flowing from a turbocharger to an exhaust outlet. The outer surface connects the front surface to the rear surface and includes an outer angled portion, an outer radial portion, and an outer axial portion. The inner surface includes an inner angled portion, an inner axial portion, and an inner radial portion extending between the inner angled portion and the inner axial portion. The inner radial portion is configured to obstruct a portion of the exhaust stream to increase back pressure.

CONTROL OF ENGINE EXHAUST BACKPRESSURE FOLLOWING ENGINE COLD-START

A method of controlling a rate of warm-up of an internal combustion engine fluidly connected to an exhaust system is disclosed. The method includes identifying a cold-start of the engine. The method also includes regulating, in response to the identified cold-start of the engine, an exhaust pressure modulation (EPM) valve arranged in a main exhaust passage of the exhaust system. The main exhaust passage channels engine exhaust gas to the ambient. Such regulation of the EPM valve will restrict a flow of the engine exhaust gas to the ambient and increase exhaust gas backpressure in the exhaust system up to a predetermined pressure value. Furthermore, the subject regulation of the EPM valve will increase a load on and the rate of warm-up of the engine. A vehicle having an engine and a controller programmed to control a rate of the engine's warm-up of according to the method is also disclosed.

A method is provided for preventing oil escape into an exhaust gas during operation of a turbocharged engine. The method includes providing pressurized fluid to an area sealing off a bearing housing of an axial turbine unit from an adjacent exhaust conduit downstream of the axial turbine unit, and detecting a malfunction in the provision of pressurized fluid. Further to this, the method includes the step of, in response to such malfunction detection, controlling an exhaust pressure increasing device arranged downstream of the axial turbine unit for increasing the pressure inside the exhaust conduit upstream of the exhaust pressure increasing device.

On the basis of absolute values α and β of variations, before and after actuation of an exhaust brake, of fuel-injection and intake-air amounts, respectively, an exhaust brake is determined to normally operate when the absolute values α and β of the variations of the fuel-injection and intake-air amounts are not less than fuel-injection and intake-air variation thresholds, respectively; the exhaust brake is determined to have failure when the absolute values α and β of the variations of the fuel-injection and intake-air amounts are less than the fuel-injection and intake-air variation thresholds, respectively.

Takeoff power boost

Embodiments are directed to boosting aircraft engine performance for takeoff and critical mission segments by reducing airflow used for cooling exhaust gases. The airflow is reduced by stopping an accessory blower or by closing an external air vent. Eliminating the cooling airflow to the exhaust has the effect of lowering the backpressure on the engine, which thereby increases maximum engine power.
