Piston bowls

The present disclosure provides piston, comprising: a skirt having an upper body portion; a crown formed at the upper body portion; and a piston bowl formed at the crown. The piston bowl includes a first combustion surface and a second combustion surface opposite the first combustion surface. Each of the first combustion surface and the second combustion surface are formed and positioned to accommodate inflowing injector spray so as to reduce heat transfer caused by impingements made by the inflowing injector spray.

The piston bowl has a half section profile that includes a bowl entry extending radially from the longitudinal piston center axis, a first bowl recess extending radially from the bowl entry and defining a bowl depth and a first radius of curvature, a second bowl recess extending radially from a first bowl recess to an end perimeter surface and defining a second radius of curvature, a bowl lip defined by the first bowl recess and the second bowl recess, and a bowl edge defined by the second bowl recess and the end perimeter surface. The first bowl recess further defines a first bowl recess exit angle at the bowl lip. The second bowl recess further defines a second bowl recess exit angle at the bowl edge.

Piston including a composite layer applied to a metal substrate

A piston for a heavy duty diesel engine including a composite layer forming at least a portion of a combustion surface is provided. The composite layer has a thickness greater than 500 microns and includes a mixture of components typically used to form brake pads, such as a thermoset resin, an insulating component, strengthening fibers, and an impact toughening additive. According to one example, the thermoset resin is a phenolic resin, the insulating component is a ceramic, the strengthening fibers are graphite, and the impact toughening additive is an aramid pulp of fibrillated chopped synthetic fibers. The composite layer also has a thermal conductivity of 0.8 to 5 W/m.Math.K. The body portion of the piston can include an undercut scroll thread to improve mechanical locking of the composite layer. The piston can also include a ceramic insert between the body portion and the composite layer.

A piston includes a swirl pocket that extends radially from the radially outer lip portion to a lower axial extremity spaced away from the radially outer lip portion a first axial distance. A convex arcuate surface extends downwardly and inwardly from the radially outer lip portion, a concave arcuate surface extends to the lower axial extremity from the convex arcuate surface, and a conical portion extends upwardly and inwardly from the concave arcuate surface to an apex that is spaced a second axial distance from the radially outer lip portion that is less than the first axial distance.
