Internal combustion engine ignition device and ignition method

When an operating condition including load and speed of an internal combustion engine is in a prescribed low-speed high-load region, i.e., an energy suppression region, having a possibility causing pre-ignition, energization time TDWLMIN for the energy suppression region is selected as a primary coil energization time. In other normal regions, normal energization time TDWL is selected. Normal energization time TDWL has a characteristic such that the normal energization time shortens, as the engine speed increases. In a low speed region, a given energization time that can fulfill a discharge energy required in a high exhaust gas recirculation region is provided. Energization time TDWLMIN for the energy suppression region is constant regardless of engine speeds and relatively short, and is set to a level such that a coil generated maximum voltage does not exceed a withstand voltage of a spark plug even when no-discharge occurs due to pre-ignition.

The present invention suppresses the worsening of stability due to a variation in EGR amounts between cylinders in a spark ignition engine. An engine control device for controlling a spark ignition engine equipped with an EGR means for recirculating exhaust gas in a combustion chamber and an air-fuel-ratio detection means for detecting the air-fuel ratio in each cylinder, the engine control device being characterized by being equipped with a means for changing the parameters for ignition control of a rich cylinder, when the air-fuel ratio of cylinders varies and there are richer cylinders and leaner cylinders relative to a prescribed air-fuel ratio during the execution of exhaust gas recirculation by the EGR means.

Spark plug fouling detection for ignition system

Methods and systems are provided for determining a type of spark plug fouling. In one example, a method may include differentiating spark plug fouling due to soot accumulation from spark plug fouling due to fuel additive accumulation based on a current on a control wire of the spark plug following application of a dwell command. Further, exhaust oxygen sensor degradation and/or exhaust catalyst degradation may be determined based on switching frequencies of one or more exhaust oxygen sensors and the type of spark plug fouling.

Provided is a vehicle control device with which improved fuel economy and lowered exhaust gas emissions can be effectively achieved without adversely affecting the driver when traveling while following a leading vehicle. The present invention has: a following-determination means that, during travel while following a leading vehicle, determines, on the basis of the speed of the host vehicle, the speed of the leading vehicle, and the distance from the leading vehicle, whether the host vehicle will be able to follow the leading vehicle by coasting; and an idle stop determination means that, when the following-determination means has determined that the host vehicle will be able to follow the leading vehicle by coasting, and the driving/travel state of the host vehicle satisfies other traveling idle stop criteria, determines that a traveling idle stop should be performed; and is provided with a determination criteria updating means for updating the determination criteria for the idle stop determination means in regard to criteria such as the leading vehicle characteristics, road surface conditions, and weather. In the event that it has been determined, from the determination conditions that have been updated in regard to the leading vehicle characteristics, etc., that following by coasting is possible, a control to shut off the on-board engine is performed.

An igniter includes a switch element and a switch control apparatus. An ignition signal IGT is input to an input line of the switch control apparatus. A high-frequency filter removes high-frequency noise from the input line. A voltage comparator compares an output voltage V.sub.FIL of the high-frequency filter with a reference voltage V.sub.REF, so as to generate a judgment signal S.sub.DET. A driving stage controls an on/off switching operation of the switch element according to the judgment signal S.sub.DET. An off-state dead-time circuit prohibits the switch element from turning off during a predetermined dead time after the judgment signal S.sub.DET transits to a negated level that corresponds to the off state of the switch element.

An ignition control device for an internal combustion engine can include an ignition coil supplying a discharge voltage to an ignition device of an ignition combustion engine, a voltage-controlled type semiconductor element connected to a primary side of the ignition coil and an ignition control section capable of repeating, multiple time in an ignition period, operations of turning ON and turning OFF of the voltage-controlled type semiconductor element by giving a gate signal to a gate of the voltage-controlled type semiconductor element. The ignition control section can include an active element that discharges gate charges accumulated on the gate of the voltage-controlled type semiconductor element upon turning OFF operation of the voltage-controlled type semiconductor element to the ground, and that is connected between the gate and a resistor at a side of the gate inserted in a gate wiring connected to the gate of the voltage-controlled type semiconductor element.

Ignition system

It is possible to adjust electromagnetic energy introduced from a low-voltage side of a primary winding 20 of an ignition coil 2 after start discharging to a spark plug 1 from the ignition coil 2 in the correct proportion by threshold-determining either one or both of a primary voltage V1 applied to a primary side of the ignition coil 2 and a secondary current I2 flowing in a secondary side of the ignition coil 2, and by opening and closing a discharging switch 32 disposed between an auxiliary power supply 3 including an energy storage coil 330 and a low-voltage side terminal 201 of the ignition coil 2.

Ignition system for spark ignition engines and method of operating same

An ignition coil system is configured for use with a spark ignition internal combustion engine. The system includes a first switching circuit electrically connected to the primary coil that provides electrical power to the primary coil. The system includes a second switching circuit connected to the primary coil that is configured to short the terminals of the primary coil after the secondary current has been induced in the secondary coil, whereby the secondary coil induces a current in the primary coil, thereby reducing the secondary current in the secondary wire coil. A controller in communication with the first and second switching circuits is configured to receive a single electronic spark timing (EST) signal and to control the conductive states and the non-conductive states of the first and second switching circuits based on this single EST signal.

Control apparatus for compression-ignition type engine

An engine control apparatus includes an ignition control section and an injection control section. When partial compression ignition combustion is carried out, the ignition control section causes an ignition plug to carry out: main ignition in which a spark is generated in a late period of a compression stroke or an initial period of an expansion stroke to initiate the SI combustion; and preceding ignition in which the spark is generated at earlier timing than the main ignition. Also, when the partial compression ignition combustion is carried out, the injection control section causes the injector to inject fuel at such timing that the fuel exists in a cylinder at an earlier time point than the preceding ignition. Energy of the preceding ignition is set to be higher when an engine speed is high than when the engine speed is low.
