A hybrid power system for an aircraft comprises a gas turbine connected to a generator for generating electrical power; an electrical storage device configured to output electrical power; a propulsor; a motor operable to drive the propulsor using electrical power from either or both of the generator and the electrical storage device; and a controller. The controller, to meet propulsor power demand, is configured to control an amount of electrical power generated by the generator, and an amount of electrical power outputted by the electrical storage device. In a first control mode coinciding with an increase in the propulsor power demand sufficient to cause a transient excursion of the operating point of a compressor of the gas turbine from a steady state working line, the controller is further configured to temporarily increase the amount of electrical power outputted by the electrical storage device such that the transient excursion is reduced.

The electric generator assembly includes: a main generator having a main rotor and a main stator, the main stator includes a first three-phase winding and a second three-phase winding, the first and second three-phase windings each configured to have a voltage induced therein by the main rotor, the first three-phase winding defining a phase shift from the second three-phase winding greater than zero degrees.

A method disclosed herein comprises generating electricity using an electric generator operatively coupled to an engine of the aircraft, supplying the electricity generated using the electric generator to a baseline power bus; generating electricity using an electric starter generator operatively coupled to the engine; and supplying the electricity generated using the electric starter generator to a supplemental power bus independent from the baseline power bus.

INTEGRATED FUEL CELL AND ENGINE COMBUSTOR ASSEMBLY

An engine assembly includes a combustor, a fuel cell stack integrated with the combustor, and a pre-burner system fluidly connected to the fuel cell stack. The fuel cell stack is configured to direct fuel and air exhaust from the fuel cell stack into the combustor. The pre-burner system is configured to control a temperature of an air flow directed into the fuel cell stack. The combustor is configured to combust the fuel and air exhaust from the fuel cell stack into one or more gaseous combustion products that drive a downstream turbine. The engine assembly can further include a catalytic partial oxidation convertor that is fluidly connected to the fuel cell stack. The catalytic partial oxidation convertor is configured to develop a hydrogen rich fuel stream to be directed into the fuel cell stack.

Re-circulating heat pump turbine

An improved steam engine is provided for operating on a recirculation of superheated air and steam. A gas turbine is including having a first intake, a first discharge and a power output shaft, said power output shaft providing rotation power output generated from a change in entropy of the gas through the turbine. A power turbine superheats the gas discharge and includes a turbocharger in operational communication with an electric DC motor, and a compressor mechanically driven by the turbocharger. The discharge from the compressor forms the turbine steam intake. A water injection system may be further provided for adding steam to the air recirculating circuit. A drive motor operatively coupled to the turbine may be used for startup to bring the turbine up to operational rotation speeds. A DC generator operatively coupled to recharge a battery driving the drive motor or for providing electrical power output.

A method may involve monitoring a first set of electrical properties associated with an electrical grid configured to couple to a generator and determining whether a transient event is present on the electrical grid based on the first set of electrical properties. The method may also involve determining a mechanical power present on a shaft of the generator based on a second set of electrical properties associated with the generator, the electrical grid, or both when the transient event is present and sending the mechanical power to a controller associated with a turbine configured to couple to the generator, wherein the controller is configured to adjust one or more operations of the turbine based on the mechanical power.
