Fan blade with internal magnetorheological fluid damping

An airfoil for use in a gas turbine engine is formed to define a cavity formed in the airfoil. The airfoil further includes at least one obstructing member arranged within the cavity and a magnetorheological fluid disposed in the cavity. A viscosity of the magnetorheological fluid increases in response to a magnetic field being generated proximate to the fluid in response to the airfoil experiencing an aeromechanic response or vibrations. As such, the obstruction of the movement of the thicker fluid by the obstructing member dampens the vibrations of the airfoil and reduces negative effects of a dynamic response of the airfoil.

A noncontacting intershaft seal system includes force generating mechanisms to reduce contact related effects. A sealing system includes an outer shaft that has a hollow interior. An inner shaft extends through the hollow interior of the outer shaft. Spaced apart end plates encircle and rotate with the inner shaft. A gland opening is defined between the inner and outer shafts and between the end plates. A ring is disposed in the gland opening. The end plates and/or the ring include force generating elements that generate force to separate the ring from the end plates, reducing contact related heat generation and wear.

A gas turbine engine can have a magnetic chip detector system with a first conductor member and a second conductor member both exposed to a lubricant flow path of the gas turbine engine, at least a first one of the conductor members including an electromagnet including a coil wrapped around a ferromagnetic core. As part of an engine shutdown procedure, an intrinsic magnetic field strength within the ferromagnetic core can be increased by circulating electrical current in the coil, and the electrical current circulation can then be interrupted for the magnetic field to remain active during engine shutdown.

BEARING SUPPORT ASSEMBLY

A bearing support assembly to support one or more bearings on a shaft. The bearing support assembly includes a bearing support frame configured to be coupled to a static frame, a plurality of ribs connected to the bearing support frame, and a bearing support connected to the plurality of ribs and configured to support a bearing of the one or more bearings. The bearing support assembly has a non-axisymmetric stiffness around a circumference of the bearing support assembly.

CENTRIFUGAL COMPRESSOR

A centrifugal compressor includes a compressor impeller that compresses air, a motor rotating the compressor impeller, and a housing including an impeller chamber, a motor chamber, and an inlet from which the air is drawn into the impeller chamber. The motor includes a stator and a rotor including a tubular member, a magnetic body, and a first shaft member and a second shaft member. The rotor includes an axial passage, a radial passage, and a connecting rod connecting the first shaft member with the second shaft member and forming a gap serving as a part of the axial passage. The housing includes a discharge port from which the air is discharged to an outside of the housing. The air outside the housing is introduced from the inlet into the motor chamber through the axial passage and the radial passage to cool the magnetic body.
