A vibration damping system for a turbine nozzle or blade includes a vibration damping element including a plurality of contacting members including a plurality of damper pins. Each damper pin includes a body. A wire mesh member surrounds the body of at least one of the plurality of damper pins. The wire mesh member has a first outer dimension sized for frictionally engaging within a body opening in the turbine nozzle or blade to damp vibration. Spacer members devoid of a wire mesh member may also be used. The damper pins can have different sizes to accommodate contiguous body openings of different sizes in the nozzle or blade. The body opening can be angled relative to a radial extent of the nozzle or blade.
GEARED GAS TURBINE ENGINE AND A GEARBOX
A gas turbine engine comprises a gearbox comprising a sun gear, an annulus gear, a plurality of planet gears and a carrier. The carrier comprises a primary structure and at least one reinforcing structure. The primary structure comprises a first material and the at least one reinforcing structure comprises a second material. The primary structure includes a first ring, a second ring spaced axially from the first ring and a plurality of circumferentially spaced axles extending axially between the first ring and the second ring. Each planet gear is rotatably mounted on a respective one of the axles by a bearing. The reinforcing structure is secured to the primary structure and the reinforcing structure comprises a particulate reinforced material or a fibre reinforced material. The reinforcing structure increases the stiffness of the carrier and reduces the weight of the carrier.
NON-NEWTONIAN MATERIALS IN AIRCRAFT ENGINE AIRFOILS
A component is provided for a turbine engine. The component can include an airfoil defining a surface, and an energy absorbing composite positioned on the surface of the airfoil or within the airfoil. The energy absorbing composite includes a shear thickening fluid distributed through a matrix.
MONOLITHIC COMPOSITE BLADE AND PLATFORM
A component for a gas turbine engine. The component includes a continuous fiber blade including an airfoil extending radially between a root and a tip and a blade attachment feature positioned at or adjacent to the root. The component further includes a platform coupled to the root of the continuous fiber blade. The platform includes a plurality of chopped fibers. Additionally, the component includes a thermoplastic polymer contained in both the continuous fiber blade and the platform. Moreover, the continuous fiber blade and platform are coupled together such that the continuous fiber blade and platform form a monolithic composite body.
Fiber texture for a casing made of composite material with improved shear resistance
A fibrous texture in the form of a web includes a first portion extending in a longitudinal direction between a proximal part and an intermediate part. One or more layers of warp threads or strands present on the side of an inner face of the fibrous texture include threads or strands of glass fibers, the threads or strands of the other layers of warp threads or strands including threads or strands of carbon fibers. The fibrous texture further includes a second portion extending in the longitudinal direction between the intermediate part and a distal part of the fibrous texture. One or more of the plurality of layers of warp threads or strands present on the side of an outer face of the fibrous texture include threads or strands of glass fibers. The warp threads or strands are continuous over the entire length of the fibrous texture.
MIDSHAFT RATING FOR TURBOMACHINE ENGINES
A turbomachine engine including a high-pressure compressor, a high-pressure turbine, a combustion chamber in flow communication with the high-pressure compressor and the high-pressure turbine, and a power turbine in flow communication with the high-pressure turbine. At least one of the high-pressure compressor, the high-pressure turbine, and the power turbine comprises a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) material. The turbomachine engine includes a low-pressure shaft coupled to the power turbine and characterized by a midshaft rating (MSR) between two hundred (ft/sec).sup.1/2 and three hundred (ft/sec).sup.1/2. The low-pressure shaft has a redline speed between fifty and two hundred fifty feet per second (ft/sec). The turbomachine engine is configured to operate up to the redline speed without passing through a critical speed associated with a first-order bending mode of the low-pressure shaft.
WOVEN FIBROUS PREFORM FOR MANUFACTURING A FAN BLADE MADE OF COMPOSITE MATERIAL
A three-dimensional fibrous preform of a fan blade includes a blade root and a blade airfoil between the blade root and a free end of the preform. The airfoil has an area with two skins and a longitudinal stiffener between the skins and, in a transverse plane, transverse yarns of the skins woven in pairs in the first and in the second skin either side of the stiffener, the yarns of a first pair of the first skin are separated into two unit yarns at the stiffener, the unit yarns being woven separately with longitudinal yarns, the yarns of a second pair of the second skin are separated into two unit yarns at the stiffener, the yarns being woven separately with longitudinal yarns, and a yarn of each pair cross over each other twice in the stiffener.
Vibration damping system for turbine blade or nozzle, retention system therefor, and method of assembly
