Embodiments described herein relate generally to apparatus with ribbed structures or geometries for stiffness and damping control, and methods of producing the same. In some embodiments, an apparatus includes a ribbed structure having a set of ribs, configured to deform elastically under shock. In some embodiments, the set of ribs can have a sinusoidal wave shape. In some embodiments, the set of ribs can have a heterogeneous wave shape. In some embodiments, the set of ribs can have material properties that change along the length of the ribbed structure, such as wavelength, amplitude, wave shape, and material thickness.

Membrane integrated lamina emergent torsion joint

A lamina emergent torsional (LET) joint that includes an integrated membrane to reduce, or eliminate, certain unwanted motions and/or displacements associated with the operation of the LET joint is disclosed. The membrane-integrated LET joint (i.e., M-LET) can be used as a hinge for a lamina emergent mechanism and/or as a surrogate fold for an origami application to ensure accurate and repeatable transitions from a planar (i.e., lamina) state to a non-planar (i.e., lamina-emergent) state, and vice versa.

An article for damping vibrations by constrained layer damping comprising: a first constraining layer; a second constraining layer; and a damping layer disposed between the first and second constraining layers, wherein the first and second constraining layers each independently comprise a fibre-reinforced composite material, wherein the first and second constraining layers each independently have a thickness from 1.5 to 5 mm, wherein the damping layer comprises a viscoelastic material, wherein the damping layer has a thickness from 1 to 10 mm and wherein the article has a thickness from 6 to 50 mm. The invention also relates to the use of said article for damping vibrations in a vehicle.

Vibration isolation for centrifuge testbeds

A method for isolating vibrations for centrifuge testing devices is provided. The method comprises coupling a test payload platform to a number of piezoelectric actuators and coupling the piezoelectric actuators to a reaction mass coupled to a centrifuge arm. A layer of vibration-absorbing material is sandwiched between the reaction mass and the centrifuge arm. The centrifuge arm is rotated around an axis, and the test payload platform is vibrated with the piezoelectric actuators as the centrifuge rotates, wherein the layer of vibration-absorbing material prevents vibrations from traveling down the centrifuge arm.

An improved adhesive-type weight system for use with vehicle wheels includes one weight or a series of weights arranged as a tape. Each weight is formed of a flexible thin iron plate material having a perimeter with opposing lateral ends and opposing lateral sides. The series of weights can be oriented end-to-end or side-to-side, and each weight includes two planar sections separated by a center raised section. The center section can be a peak, an arch, a step, or some other raised configuration. Additionally, it can be tapered from one side to another. On the underside of each weight is adhesive and a release paper, which can be continuous across a series of weights or separated and applied under each individual weight. Where weights are attached to adjacent weights in series, preferably a notch or cut extends along the connection to encourage easy separation.
