PISTON RING
A piston ring includes a plurality of first ring pieces placed inside the ring groove in a stacking manner such that the first ring pieces adhere to each other in the axis direction. The first ring pieces include respective piston ring gap portions each having end surfaces separated from each other in the circumferential direction of the first ring pieces such that the end surfaces face each other via a ring gap having a predetermined dimension. The respective piston ring gap portions of the first ring pieces are displaced from each other in the circumferential direction. A closing member is provided to close the piston ring gap portions of the first ring pieces in the radial direction of the first ring pieces.
SEAL WITH BACK-UP RING
A back-up ring (1) for a gland seal includes at least two part ring portions (2,4). Each part ring portion comprises first (6, 10) and second (8, 12) ends. Each end has an undulating surface (22, 24) for overlapping in engagement with a corresponding undulating surface on an end of another part ring portion, to form the back-up ring (1). When the part ring portions (2,4) are assembled to form the back-up ring (1) and are held together by axial and/or radial compression, the engagement of the undulating surfaces (22, 24) restricts relative movement between the part ring portions. A seal assembly (34) including the back-up ring (1) is also disclosed.
PISTON SEALING RING ASSEMBLY HAVING A GAP COVER ELEMENT
The present disclosure provides a sealing ring assembly having a ring and one or more gap cover elements, configured to seal a high-pressure region from a lower pressure region of a piston and cylinder device. The ring may be segmented, and the gap cover elements may engage with interfaces between the ring segments. The gap cover elements are configured to move radially outward and wear as the ring wears. The gap cover elements may include, for example, wedge-shaped features that engage with corresponding wedge recesses in the interfaces. The sealing ring assembly may include a high-pressure boundary and a low-pressure boundary. As the sealing ring wears, the gap cover elements stay engaged with the interfaces, so that ring gaps do not form on the low pressure boundary.

Reinforced sealing rings
The present disclosure provides a sealing ring assembly having a sealing ring and a reinforcement, configured to seal a high-pressure region from a lower pressure region of a piston and cylinder device. The sealing ring may be segmented, and a metal layer, wire, or other reinforcement may be affixed to the ring. The reinforcement is placed into tension against the sealing ring, which is correspondingly placed into compression. The composite structure of a relatively brittle sealing ring and reinforcement provides for reduced tensile loads in the sealing ring, thus extending life and reducing the likelihood of failure. The brittle portion of the sealing ring assembly may include a polymer or ceramic such as graphite, which is relatively less strong in tension than compression.
Cryogenic piston ring improvement
A piston ring set of a cryogenic pump includes a first piston ring and a second piston ring which are dissimilarly shaped and cooperatively shaped to form a hollow cylindrical shape when in abutment to one another. The first piston ring is C-shaped and defines a middle portion disposed between a first end portion and a second end portion. A piston ring gap is disposed between a first distal end of the first end portion and a second distal end of the second end portion. When the first piston ring is in abutment with the second piston ring forming the hollow cylindrical shape, the second piston ring does not extend along the middle portion of the first piston ring while the second piston ring does extend along the first end portion and second end portion of the first piston ring.
