Launching Elongate Subsea Structures
20210221475 · 2021-07-22 ·

A method of launching an elongate subsea structure such as a pipeline bundle unit into water provides buoyant support to the structure by displacing water with a hollow buoyancy unit that applies buoyant upthrust to the structure. By lowering the buoyancy unit in the water to bring a permanently open aperture of the buoyancy unit beneath a surface level of the water, the buoyancy unit is flooded with water through the or each permanently open aperture to reduce the buoyant upthrust applied to the structure.

Controlling the buoyancy of a mass of buoyant spheres
10935163 · 2021-03-02 · ·

A buoyant element for conferring buoyancy on a subsea structure or apparatus has a floodable envelope that contains a mass of buoyant spheres and a void extending between the spheres. Openings penetrate the envelope, in fluid communication with the void. One or more one destruction devices are arranged to destroy at least one of the spheres within the envelope in use. After the envelope has been submerged and flooded to fill the void between the spheres with water, the destruction devices are imploded to create shockwaves that expand the void by sympathetic implosion of the spheres. Additional water is admitted into the envelope through the openings to fill the expanding void, thereby ballasting the buoyant element.

Construction of buoyant elements comprising packed macrospheres

A method of filling a chamber with buoyant macrospheres places a mass of the spheres into a mould cavity. In the mould cavity, packing of the spheres is optimized to form an optimally-packed mass, followed by fixing the spheres in the optimally-packed mass to form a block. The block is then transferred from the mould cavity into the chamber while the spheres of the block remain fixed in the optimally-packed mass. This method enables the production of a buoyant element comprising an envelope defining an internal chamber that contains a mass of buoyant macrospheres each with an external diameter of at least 5 mm, packed with a packing factor of at least 50%.

Subsea Buoyancy Systems

A method of providing buoyancy to a subsea structure such as a pipeline bundle comprises attaching to the structure a rigid elongate buoyancy tube that defines a floodable envelope. The envelope is arranged to contain a mass of buoyant macrospheres. Multiple openings penetrate a tubular wall of the buoyancy tube, in fluid communication with a void that extends between the macrospheres inside the tube. The void floods via the openings when the buoyancy tube is submerged, whereupon the macrospheres apply buoyant upthrust to the surrounding buoyancy tube and hence to the subsea structure to which the tube is rigidly attached.

Controlling buoyancy when towing, lowering and raising submerged structures

A subsea structure has an elongate articulated buoyancy string having a longitudinal series of buoyancy elements, and at least one elongate buoyancy holder that is fixed relative to the structure and is capable of housing the buoyancy string. The buoyancy of the structure can be altered by moving the buoyancy string along a transit path that extends along and within the buoyancy holder and through an end opening of the buoyancy holder. The buoyancy string passes through that end opening on being inserted into or withdrawn from the buoyancy holder.

Method of governing the elevation, attitude and structural integrity of a pressure-containing vessel in a body of liquid
10655756 · 2020-05-19 ·

A method for governing the elevation, attitude and structural integrity of a pressure-containing vessel in a body of liquid counterbalances flotation and incompressible ballast mediums against each other in separate serial compartments. Varying the quantity of incompressible ballast medium allows control of the elevation and attitude of the vessel. If the flotation medium is compressible, varying the quantity of flotation medium allows control of the ambient pressure of the vessel. The method facilitates floating and towing and laying of an undersea pipeline on, to and at a deep water site.

Tie in of pipeline to subsea structure

A subsea structure includes a support in the form of a foundation or a supporting structure mounted to a foundation. A method for installing a pipeline includes: providing the support with a pull-in point at a proximal location at a first side of the support; providing the support with a strong point at a distal location, which is spaced apart from the proximal location, there being a straight clear path between the pull-in point and the strong point bridging some of or all of a width of the support; passing a pull down wire through a guide at the strong point and using the pull down wire to pull in the pipeline; laying down the pipeline and passing the pull down wire along the clear path; and continuing the laying down and/or pulling in until a tie-in head of the pipeline is at a required location at the pull-in point.

Pipeline method and apparatus

A method and apparatus are provided for laying pipelines. The apparatus is attached to a portion of a pipeline and includes a tensioning member and a buoyancy element attached to a mid-portion of the tensioning member. When the buoyancy element is submerged, the buoyancy force tensions the tensioning member, and the pipeline will take the intended deflected shape to follow seabed depressions.
