The light-emitting strip is fixed to a step of the step layer, and a light-emitting surface of the light-emitting strip is disposed towards the light-transmissive cover. A new downlight structure is provided in this disclosure.

The LED units of a foil are positioned between positions of the LED units of the other foils. At least one foil of the multilayer structure, towards which at least one of the LED units is configured to radiate light, is transparent to the light. Brightness of the LED units is at least foil-specifically controllable with operational electric power fed to the foils through the contact pattern. The LED units of at least one foil are of a different tone or color or are controlled to output a different tone or color than the LED units of at least one other foil.

Light assembly

An improved light assembly includes aligned directional light sources mounted one behind another. A distal one of the light sources occludes light emitted from a proximal one of the light sources. A reflector is interposed between the light sources, with a convex surface facing the proximal one of the light sources. Thus, the light assembly projects a light field extending at least through an 180° hemisphere, and up to about 270° backwards from the forward orientation of the light field, well-illuminating lateral approaches to the assembly.

A folded light engine comprising an array of LEDs mounted on a strip substrate, wherein the strip substrate comprises a central portion provided with a first set of through-holes, a first peripheral portion provided with an electrically conducting track connecting a first group of LEDs and a second set of through holes, and a second peripheral portion provided with an electrically conducting track connecting a second group of LEDs. The first peripheral portion is folded over the central portion, so that the LEDs thereon coincide with through-holes in the central portion, and the second peripheral portion is folded over the first peripheral portion, so that each LEDs thereon coincide with a combined through-hole formed by through-holes in the central portion and in the first peripheral portion. An elongated light engine can be cost efficiently manufactured in a relatively simple processes, including single-sided circuit patterning and LED mounting.

Ceiling illumination is a method by which indirect lighting can be achieved in a space to replace a recessed downlight and to provide better light utilization and application efficiency. A solid-state lighting apparatus is invented which includes a support structure and a substrate for mounting LEDs and configured to emit light in a direction such that, when installed as per the invented method, can illuminate a ceiling and subsequently the space below it.
