Tunable nucleate boiling using electric fields and ionic surfactants

A tunable boiling system includes a fluid having a solvent and an ionic surfactant in the solvent, a counter electrode disposed within the fluid, and a working electrode having a surface in contact with the fluid. The system is configured to apply a voltage between the surface and the counter electrode in order to affect bubble formation in the fluid at the surface. Methods of making and using the system are also provided.

A heating apparatus can include a fire cage defining a cage space containing heated fuel. The heating apparatus can also include a container configured to be supported by the fire cage at a container position, wherein the container is above at least a portion of the cage space. The container can be designed to hold burning fuel above the heated fuel. Also, a heating apparatus can be arranged to form a food grill, and the heating apparatus can be rearranged to form a fire cage configuration. A thermal store can be placed in a heat collecting position on a side of the fire cage in a first location to heat the thermal store. The thermal store can be moved away from the fire cage and can be positioned in a second location away from the fire cage to emit thermal energy to heat air around the second location.

Grill cookboxes including dual-lipped lower rims are disclosed. An example cookbox includes an interior surface, an exterior surface, and a lower rim. The exterior surface is located opposite the interior surface. The lower rim is located along a bottom portion of the cookbox. The lower rim includes an inner lip, an outer lip, and a downwardly facing channel. The inner lip defines an opening formed in the bottom portion of the cookbox. The downwardly facing channel extends between a free end of the inner lip and a free end of the outer lip.
