LAUNCHING SYSTEM FOR AN AIR GUN

A launching system for an air gun includes a compression cylinder. The compression cylinder includes a cylinder body having an open rearward end and a closed forward end with an interior bore therebetween. The forward end has a transfer port configured for fluid communication with a barrel of an air gun. The piston includes a piston body. The piston body has a forward portion disposed within the interior bore. A sealing device is disposed on the forward portion of the piston body. One of a ferromagnetic section or magnet is disposed on a rearward portion of the piston body. A drive coil assembly is disposed over the one of a ferromagnetic section or magnet. When the drive coil assembly is energized with a first polarity, the piston is drawn from a reset position to a firing position relative to the compression cylinder by the drive coil assembly with increasing force.

Systems, methods, and apparatuses are described for accelerating projectiles at high velocity. A barrel may include one or more heaters configured to heat a bore of the barrel prior to launch of a projectile. The barrel bore may be formed in a tungsten sleeve and may be heated to high temperatures. Heat from the barrel bore may be transferred to expanding propellant behind a projectile as it travels through the barrel bore.

A projectile launching apparatus includes a linear motion converter driven by a motor, a piston coupled to the linear motion converter and reciprocally movable within a cylinder, a gas spring and a breech assembly. The piston, when actuated by the linear motion converter, may energize the gas spring, and after the gas spring is fully energized, the linear motion converter may release the piston. When the piston is released, the piston may compress a gas within the cylinder, which compressed gas may be communicated to a barrel of the breech assembly. The compressed gas may expand in the barrel of the breech assembly for launching a projectile that has been chambered in the barrel, with a high velocity.

A pre-charged pneumatic air gun includes a barrel, a firing valve, a trigger assembly, a compressed gas storage tank, a first chamber, a larger second chamber and a compression piston movable within the first chamber and the second chamber. The compression piston is operable to increase a pressure in the first chamber to a final first chamber pressure greater than an initial first chamber pressure by sequentially opening a first fill valve with the second fill valve closed to allow compressed gas to flow into the first chamber then opening a second fill valve to allow the compressed gas to flow into the second chamber, thereby displacing the compression piston and further compressing the compressed gas in the first chamber to achieve the final first chamber pressure.
