Attitude determination by pulse beacon and low cost inertial measuring unit

The system and method of attitude determination by pulse beacon and extremely low cost inertial measuring unit. A pulse beacon is used to generate a plurality of pulses detected by a detector or receiver located on the rear of a projectile such that direction of arrival can be determined. A synchronized clock proved for velocity and range information. Altitude can also be determined and may use an altimeter or the like. The use of a low cost IMU is possible with internal calibration by the system. Real-time attitude information provides for correction for crosswind and other drift enabling the system to have less down range dispersion.

The controller operates the SLM to encode the guidance information in the light beam. The guidance information may be encoded in light pattern including at least one of the following: a spatial light pattern formed in a cross-section of the light beam, a temporal light pattern in the light beam, and a spatiotemporal light pattern. The guidance information is encoded in the light beam such that the remote platform can navigate towards the target by detecting at least a cross-sectional region of the light beam, decoding a portion of the guidance information encoded in the detected cross-sectional region and thereby determining guidance instructions for navigating the remote platform(s) towards the target destination.

The DLP mirror array tracks the air-borne object with a non-scanning beam and immediately provides a correction update to the controller using a pulse repetition interval (PRI) varying code. The system can be packaged in a small format, at a lower cost, and with a higher reliability.
