An inertial igniter for igniting a thermal battery, including: a base having a first projection; a striker mass rotatably connected to the base having a second projection, when the striker mass is rotated towards the base, the first projection impacts the second projection; a member having a first portion engaging with a second portion of the striker mass to restrict rotation of the striker mass unless a predetermined acceleration is experienced; a mass movable from a first position where an acceleration is less than the predetermined acceleration and a second position where the acceleration is greater than the predetermined acceleration to permit the first and second portions to come out of engagement; a spring for biasing the mass in the first position; and a rotation prevention member for permitting impact of the first and second projections when the predetermined acceleration is experienced and the mass moves to the second position.

Projectile with pyrotechnically timed release of a secondary payload

The present invention relates to a firearm projectile capable of releasing a secondary payload mid-flight through a pyrotechnic timing mechanism. Once the firearm is fired, the powder in the casing pushes out the projectile as a typical round. In addition, the powder ignites the delay column. The formulation and amount of delay pyrotechnics determines the delay time. When the delay column is burned, the final portion ignites an expelling charge. The expelling charge builds pressure in the projectile casing and separates the base plug from the main projectile housing. The expelling assembly pushes out the secondary payload out the rear of the projectile. Although the payload exits the rear of the projectile at minimum velocity, the net velocity of the payload is still in the forward direction.

Device for the controlled initiation of the deflagration of an explosive charge

A device for the controlled initiation of a subdetonative reaction of an explosive charge arranged in a shell includes at least one explosive charge core extending in a region of a longitudinal axis of the explosive charge. A transverse dimension of the explosive charge core is adaptable to a radial extent of the shell in a longitudinal direction of the explosive charge, while a charging of the explosive charge core is set homogeneously or locally variably over a length of the explosive charge core with respect to a type of explosive material.

System for Extended Use in High Temperature Wellbore

A method and system for downhole operations that includes an energetic material with a reduced sensitivity to temperature, and a temperature rating that is higher than other energetic materials. Downhole tools that use energetic material thus can have a higher temperature rating with the reduced sensitivity energetic material. One embodiment of the energetic material includes an energetic heterocycle compound, such as 2,6-diamino-3,5-dinitropyrazine-1-oxide.

Fire-retarding artillery shell

An artillery shell is fired out of a gun towards a fire. A trigger releases a fire-retarding material from the artillery shell to retard the fire.

Cook-off mitigation system

Embodiments are directed cook-off mitigation systems. As assembled, a munition fuzewell is torqued into the aft end of a munition. The fuzewell is hollow and has an inner and an outer surface. The hollow fuzewell is configured to release during cook-off. Release is assisted by employing a biased equivalent strength threaded release ring concentric about the fuzewell. The biased equivalent strength threaded release ring has a threaded inner surface and a threaded outer surface. The biased equivalent strength threaded release ring's threaded inner surface threadingly-engages with threads on the fuzewell's outer surface. A munition case is concentric about the biased equivalent strength threaded release ring.

Methods of initiating insensitive explosive formulations

The embodiments are directed to methods of initiating insensitive explosive formulations. The disclosed methods include positioning a donor explosive pellet adjacent to an insensitive acceptor explosive pellet having a plurality of relative percent theoretical maximum density (TMD) zones. The insensitive acceptor explosive pellet is adjacent to an insensitive explosive fill. Upon donor explosive pellet initiation, the donor explosive pellet provides a shock stimulus to the insensitive acceptor explosive pellet, which initiates the insensitive acceptor explosive pellet, causing a detonation wave to be driven through the plurality of relative percent TMD zones and into the insensitive explosive fill.
