Capturing features for determining routes

Techniques for determining a location and type of traffic-related features and using such features in route planning are discussed herein. The techniques may include determining that sensor data represents a feature such as a traffic light, road segment, building type, and the like. The techniques further include determining a cost of a feature, whereby the cost is associated with the effect of a feature on a vehicle traversing an environment. A feature database can be updated based on features in the environment. A cost of the feature can be used to update costs of routes associated with the location of the feature.

The system includes a remote computing server configured to maintain map data and distribute it to the fleet, including local map data to individual vehicles pertaining to their surroundings. Individual vehicles may compare the local map data with the information related to their individual surroundings. Based on such comparisons, individual vehicles may detect discrepancies between the local map data and the information related to their individual surroundings. The remote computing server may modify and/or update the map data based on the detected discrepancies.

A method of generating a roadway map includes receiving an image of a roadway. The method further includes identifying features in the roadway. The method further includes assigning a feature identification (FID) number to each of the identified features. The method further includes generating a score for each of the identified features based on a comparison between the identified features and a corresponding feature having a same FID number from a previously generated roadway map. The method further includes determining whether each of the identified features have changed based on whether the corresponding score exceeds a predetermined threshold. The method further includes updating the roadway map by changing identified features determined to have changed and maintaining identified features determined to have remain unchanged.
