The housing includes a connecting board being a metal board and a supporting shell being a plastic member. The supporting shell includes a bottom wall opposite to a disposing opening of the connecting board and a surrounding side wall integrally surrounding and connecting to the bottom wall. The surrounding side wall encloses a portion of the connecting board. The piezoelectric assembly includes an encapsulating body and a piezoelectric sheet enclosed by the encapsulating body. The encapsulating body is disposed on the bottom wall and surrounded by the surrounding side wall. The piezoelectric sheet has a sensing surface exposed to the encapsulating body and facing the bottom wall. The fixing members fix the board on the connecting board, thereby pressing the sensing surface of the piezoelectric sheet to the bottom wall.

The sound transducer module is designed, by superimposing the at least two sound signals, to emit the superimposition sound signal both in a first direction to the surface of the fluid and in a second direction to the reference element, said second direction running at a predetermined sound signal angle with respect to the first direction.

A reflected acoustic signal is generated from an impedance barrier between the fluid container and a fluid therein. A characteristic of a material of the fluid container and/or the fluid therein are determined.

An ultrasonic level sensor (1) for monitoring the level of a liquid in a vessel comprises a main housing (3) having a lower part (5) and an upper part (6). An ultrasonic transducer (19) having an output face (25), through which ultrasonic signals are transmitted and received is housed in a sub-housing (39) located in an engagement recess (17) in the lower part (5). A communicating aperture (24) accommodates ultrasonic signals transmitted by the ultrasonic transducer (19) to and from the liquid surface, the level of which is to be monitored. The sub-housing (39) comprises a cylindrical side wall (40) extending upwardly from a protective element (35) for protecting the ultrasonic transducer (19). The protective element (35) comprises a circular disc of resilient material impermeable to corrosive gases and vapours in the vessel, the liquid level of which is being monitored, and comprises a central working portion (48) of diameter similar to that of the output face (25), and an outer peripheral portion (49) extending around the central working portion (48) of thickness greater than the thickness of the central working portion (48). The central working portion (48) is of constant thickness of approximately 0.35 mm and in its relaxed state is convex when viewed from the ultrasonic transducer (19), and is deformable into a planar configuration to abut and vibrate in unison with the output face (25) of the ultrasonic transducer (19) to minimise attenuation of the ultrasonic signals.

A second face of the host material is mountable to a wall of a vessel that holds a liquid. When the second face of the host material is mounted to the wall of the vessel, the transducer when activated at an activation frequency launches a Lamb wave into the wall of the vessel. The transducer is designed such that a phase velocity of the Lamb wave in the wall of the vessel is greater than a speed of sound in the liquid held by the vessel.

The electronic processor is configured to produce, in response to determining the first level is less than or equal to the target level, a second signal to drive the second transducer, receive a second indication of a detected second echo from the second transducer, and determine a second level of the fluid based on the second indication.
