An infrared thermometer measures a temperature of an energy zone. The infrared thermometer comprises a beam splitter for splitting an incident light beam from an energy zone into an infrared light beam and a visible light beam; an infrared detector for detecting the infrared light beam and generating a signal indicative of a temperature of the energy zone according to the detected infrared light beam; and a sighting device having an optical module for generating a reflective reticle image and transmitting the visible light beam to generate a target image at a sight window, wherein the sighting device is configured to superimpose the reflective reticle image over the target image at the sight window to align the infrared detector with the energy zone. The infrared thermometer and an associated measurement method facilitate the alignment of the energy zone by the users, thereby improving the accuracy of the measurement.

Ambient temperature measurement sensor

A sensor package can have a reference thermopile sensor and a reference temperature sensor disposed therein to determine an ambient temperature. In one or more implementations, the sensor package includes a substrate having a substrate surface, a reference thermopile sensor disposed over the substrate surface, a reference temperature sensor disposed over the substrate surface, and a lid assembly disposed over the thermopile sensor and the reference thermopile sensor. The lid assembly includes a structure having a transparent portion that passes electromagnetic radiation occurring in a limited spectrum of wavelengths. The reference thermopile sensor generates a reference thermopile sensor signal representing a difference between a temperature of the substrate surface and a temperature of a lid assembly surface. An external ambient temperature can be determined based upon the reference thermopile sensor signal.

Infrared temperature sensor

An infrared temperature sensor comprises a first communication port and a second communication port. A plurality of infrared temperature sensors can be cascaded to each other and connected to an external host controller through the second communication port. The external host controller can set up and administer the unique addresses of the plurality of the infrared temperature sensors through the second communication port, whereby to selectively perform multicasting communication or unicasting communication with the plurality of infrared temperature sensors through the first communication port. The infrared temperature sensor further comprises a second thermopile sensing element used to sense the thermal radiation of a package structure, whereby to compensate for the measurement error induced by temperature variation of the package structure. Thus, the measurement accuracy is increased.

Apparatus and methods are disclosed for highly accurate remote measurement of sea surface skin temperature. Thermal band 8 to 14 micron images of the surface of the ocean taken by a downward looking infrared camera are processed to determine the optimum segments of the image to utilize. The influence of contaminating reflection of the downwelling flux from the sky and other error sources are removed and from the data and/or otherwise corrected for making sea surface temperature accuracy within several tenths of a degree possible.
