Oil soluble taggants
A process for detecting oil or lubricant contamination in the production of an article by adding a Stokes-shifting taggant to an oil or lubricant of a machine utilized to produce the article or a component thereof, irradiating the articles produced with a first wavelength of radiation, and monitoring the articles for emission of radiation at a second wavelength. The taggant can be in the form of a composition containing a Stokes-shifting taggant, which absorbs radiation at a first wavelength and emits radiation at a second wavelength, different from said first wavelength, dissolved or dispersed in an oil or lubricant.
Rapid assessment of crude oil fouling propensity to prevent refinery fouling
A process for producing liquid transportation fuels in a petroleum refinery while avoiding the usage of crude oil feed stock that characterized by a fouling thermal resistance having the potential to foul refinery processes and equipment. Spectral data selected from NIR, NMR or both is obtained and converted to wavelets coefficients data. A genetic algorithm (or support vector machines) is then trained to recognize subtle features in the wavelet coefficients data to allow classification of crude samples into one of two groups based on fouling potential. Rapid classification of a potential crude oil feed stock according to its fouling potential prevents the utilization of feed stocks characterized by increased fouling potential in a petroleum refinery to produce liquid transportation fuels.

IMPROVEMENTS IN OPTICAL EMISSION SPECTROMETRY
A method for controlling the flow of gas through a spectrometer, comprising: flowing a gas through a volume of the spectrometer, the volume being a volume through which light from a sample passes along a first path to reach a first detector and the gas being transparent to the light in a spectral region analysed by the spectrometer; transmitting light from a light source along a second path through the gas to a second detector; detecting an intensity of the light from the light source at the second detector at one or more wavelengths of the light; comparing the detected intensity of the light to a respective setpoint corresponding to a desired transmittance of the gas in the volume of the spectrometer and generating at least one error signal based on the comparison; and adjusting a flow rate of the gas through the volume of the spectrometer based on the error signal, in particular to minimise the difference between the detected intensity and setpoint.
Hydration monitor and methods of use
The present disclosure relates to optical methods and devices based on pulsate behavior of blood and optical absorption spectroscopy to measure the level of water and/or other substances or compounds, such as an alcohol or lipid, in the blood and the tissues surrounding blood vessels and arteries.
CHARACTERIZATION OF CRUDE OIL BY NEAR INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY
A system and a method for determining one or more distillation temperatures for one or more given distillation weight percentages of a crude oil sample are provided, which can be used to produce a simulated distillation curve. Simulated distillation temperatures of crude oil samples are assigned as a function of density and data derived from direct near infrared spectroscopy measurement of the crude oil samples.

OPTICAL ANALYZER
A spectroscopic measuring device includes a halogen lamp as a light source, a lens of an irradiating system, a mirror, and a spectrometer. The lens of the irradiating optical system emits light from the halogen lamp to a measurement object. The mirror is an optical member, and the mirror is arranged coaxial with the lens and conducts detecting light between the halogen lamp and the measurement object, to the spectrometer. The spectrometer is an analyzing part and analyzes material of the measurement object on the basis of the light received via the mirror. The light from the halogen lamp to the measurement object passes through the peripheral part of the optical axis of the lens, and the light to be received by the spectrometer passes through the center part of the optical axis of the lens, at the position of the mirror.

Chemical pattern recognition method for evaluating quality of traditional Chinese medicine based on medicine effect information
A chemical pattern recognition method for evaluating the quality of a traditional Chinese medicine based on medicine effect information, comprising: collecting chemical information of a traditional Chinese medicine sample, obtaining medicine effect information reflecting a clinical therapeutic effect thereof, performing spectrum-effect relationship analysis on the chemical information and the medicine effect information, and obtaining an index significantly related to the medicine effect as a feature chemical index; dividing the traditional Chinese medicine sample into a training set and a test set; using a pattern recognition method to extract a feature variable from samples of the training set by taking the feature chemical index as an input variable; building a pattern recognition model using the feature variable; and substituting feature variable values of samples of the test set into the model, and completing chemical pattern recognition evaluation of the quality of the traditional Chinese medicine. According to the method, chemical reference substances are not needed, the chemical pattern recognition model is built on the basis of the feature chemical index reflecting the medicine effect, the one-sidedness and the subjectivity of the existing standards are overcome, and a traditional Chinese medicine quality evaluation system capable of reflecting both the clinical therapeutic effect and overall chemical composition information is finally formed.
