A method of determining wear/degradation levels of a consumable assembly of a welding/plasma torch may utilize a controlled sound signal in order to determine an acoustic profile or full spectral audio analysis dataset of the consumable assembly that facilitate the identification of patterns that correlate to certain wear/degradation levels of the consumable assembly. The full spectral audio analysis dataset may be obtained by subjecting a given consumable assembly to a controlled sound signal between operations and as the consumable assembly degrades over time. The full spectral audio analysis may serve as a wear/degradation profile over the life of the given consumable assembly. With a full dataset known for a particular consumable assembly model, an acoustic profile of another consumable assembly of the same model may be obtained and compared to the full dataset in order to identify the wear/degradation level of the tested consumable assembly.

CYLINDRICAL ULTRASONIC SCANNING APPARATUS

An apparatus for scanning a cylindrical part is provided. The apparatus includes an ultrasonic transducer operable to emit ultrasonic waves into and receive ultrasonic waves from the part, with the ultrasonic transducer connected to a translation stage to move it up and down the part and around the circumference of the part. The apparatus does not mechanically contact the cylindrical or maintains contact only with soft elements, such that the apparatus does not damage sensitive parts. The apparatus also contains no magnetic parts, nor any elements that rely on magnetic detection, such that the apparatus is capable of being used in the vicinity of a part exhibiting a strong magnetic field.

Using various techniques, a position of a probe assembly of a non-destructive inspection system, such as a phase array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) system, can be determined using the acoustic capability of the probe assembly and an inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor, e.g., including a gyroscope and an accelerometer, without relying on a complex encoding mechanism. The IMU sensor can provide an estimate of a current location of the probe assembly, which can be confirmed by the probe assembly, using an acoustic signal. In this manner, the data acquired from the IMU sensor and the probe assembly can be used in a complementary manner.
