Differential Mobility Spectrometry Method
Methods and systems are provided herein for varying the CoV about a nominal CoV-apex while monitoring the ion of interest corresponding to the nominal CoV-apex as it is transmitted by a DMS. In various aspects, the CoV can be swept or stepped across a series of values during the injection of ions into the DMS such that a composite spectra of the ion of interest transmitted by the DMS (or its product ions following one or more stages of fragmentation) can be generated so as to include the transmission of the particular ion at a CoV with optimum sensitivity (i.e., if distinct from the CoV-apex), thereby improving the robustness, accuracy, and/or selectivity during experimental conditions relative to known DMS techniques, which typically used a fixed CoV value for each ion of interest.
Method of Charge State Selection
A method of mass spectrometry or ion mobility spectrometry is disclosed in which analyte ions of a desired charge state are isolated. The method comprises: separating analytes according to their electrophoretic mobility; ionising the analytes; and mass filtering the resulting analyte ions, wherein the mass to charge ratios of the ions transmitted by a mass filter are varied as a function of the electrophoretic mobility and according to a predetermined relationship such that substantially only ions having said desired charge state are transmitted by the mass filter.
MASS SPECTROMETER AND ION MOBILITY SPECTROMETER
A cylindrically-shaped auxiliary electrode and a cylindrically-shaped reflecting electrode are located anterior to a spray flow ejected from an ESI ionization probe. An inlet end of a heated capillary extends into the space between the two electrodes. The auxiliary electrode and heated capillary are grounded, while the reflecting electrode is supplied with a direct-current voltage having the same polarity as measurement target ions. As a result, a reflecting electric field which reflects ions originating from sample components and charged droplets, being carried by the spray flow, is created within the space between the two electrodes. A focusing electric field for focusing ions onto the inlet end is also created in an area near the inlet end. The ions originating from sample components are thereby separated from the gas flow and gathered around the inlet end, to be drawn into the heated capillary and sent into a vacuum chamber.
MASS SPECTROMETER
In a device adjustment process, when a solenoid valve is opened, a gas resulting from vaporization of PFTBA held in a container is drawn into an ion source, a relationship between ambient temperature and a correction coefficient for actual signal values is experimentally determined beforehand. In an actual adjustment process, an ambient temperature acquirer reads the ambient temperature and refers to the correction information to determine the correction coefficient corresponding to the ambient temperature at that moment. A signal value corrector multiplies an actually measured peak area value by the correction coefficient to correct the actual signal value. A device adjustment controller adjusts a voltage applied to an ion detector so that the corrected actual signal value matches with a reference signal value. The voltage applied to the ion detector can be thereby adjusted so that the detector has the same level of gain independent of the ambient temperature.

A chromatograph mass spectrometer includes a measurement unit including a mass spectrometry unit capable of MS.sup.n analysis, and to separate sample components and repeatedly perform mass spectrometry, a chromatogram display processing unit to create a chromatogram at a specific m/z and display it, a time designation unit to designate a retention time according to a user operation, a spectrum display processing unit to create an MS spectrum corresponding to the retention time and an MS.sup.n spectrum, as an MS.sup.n analysis result corresponding to the retention time, targeting an m/z of a peak in the MS spectrum or an m/z range including the m/z, and display the MS spectrum and the MS.sup.n spectrum on the same screen, the time designation section designating a retention time by a user moving a pointer, and the spectrum display processing unit, updating the display corresponding to the retention time corresponding to the pointer position.
Method and portable ion mobility spectrometer for the detection of an aerosol
A portable ion mobility spectrometry apparatus (1) for detecting an aerosol and a method for using the apparatus. The apparatus comprises an ion mobility spectrometer (3); a portable power source (5) carried by the apparatus for providing power to the apparatus (1); an inlet (7) for collecting a flow of air to be tested by the spectrometer (3); a heater (4) configured to heat the air to be tested to vapourise an aerosol carried by the air and a controller (2) configured to control the spectrometer (3) to obtain samples from the heated air, wherein the controller is configured to increase a heat output from the heater (4) for a selected time period before obtaining samples from the heated air.
