Pipe damage assessment system and method

A technique facilitates examination of a tubing string. A sensor is mounted to monitor a pipe for a defect or defects. The sensor outputs data on the defect to a data processing system which identifies the type and severity of the defect. The data processing system also may be used to track the defect to determine changes to the defect during, for example, subsequent uses of the pipe. Based on the evaluation of the defect, recommendations are provided with respect to future use or handling of the pipe.

The present invention relates to a device for electromagnetically measuring, in real time, the percentage of austenite contained in a continuously running steel strip during an in-line process for manufacturing or transforming the latter, such that the magnetic field produced by the alternating current flowing through the emitter coil (1) produces, in the steel strip (5), induced currents that generate an induced magnetic field creating, in the receiver coil (2), an electromotive force that can be measured by the voltage measurement device (4), the amplitude of this electromotive force being dependent on the voltage applied to the emitter coil and on the nature of the steel in the strip (5). The device is characterized in that the first and second coils (1, 2) are arranged in parallel to one another with a set distance between them and, in use, on either side of the steel strip (5).

Fatigue life assessment

A technique facilitates prediction of run life. Data relating to a pipe defect is provided to a data processing system for comparison to stored data regarding defects. Additionally, data regarding fatigue life accumulation is stored on the data processing system as it relates to fatigue life of the pipe based on the number of cycles to failure of the pipe without the presence of the defect. The number of cycles experienced by the pipe at the time the defect occurs in the pipe also is determined and provided to the data processing system. The system and methodology further comprise using the data regarding the defect type, the fatigue life accumulation data for the pipe, and the number of cycles experienced by the pipe at the time of the defect to estimate a remaining number of cycles until failure of the pipe.

Multi-Zone Processing Of Pipe Inspection Tools

A method and system for estimating a pipe property for a plurality of nested pipes. The method may comprise disposing an electromagnetic logging tool in a wellbore. The electromagnetic logging tool may comprise a transmitter disposed on the electromagnetic logging tool and a receiver disposed on the electromagnetic logging tool. The method may further comprise transmitting an electromagnetic field from the transmitter into a pipe string to energize the pipe string with the electromagnetic field thereby producing an eddy current that emanates from the pipe string, measuring the eddy current in the pipe string with the receiver on at least one channel to obtain a plurality of measurements, forming a log from the plurality of measurements, zoning the log into a plurality of zones based at least in part on a well plan, and extracting a representative signal for each zone of the plurality of zones.

Eddy current system for workpiece inspection

A workpiece handling system for inspection of workpieces having an elongated cylindrical segment with an enlarged feature such as a threaded fastener. A pair of rollers is inclined with respect to horizontal, and having cylindrical surfaces separated by a gap and rotated about parallel axes, with upwardly presented end surfaces. A drive arrangement rotates the rollers. A slide mechanism enables the rollers to be set at a first and second separation gaps. A workpiece transfer mechanism loads the workpiece onto the rollers, rotation of the rollers set at the first separation gap causes the workpieces to rotate. A sensor probe is positioned in close proximity to the workpiece head as the workpiece is rotated. A workpiece receiving system is provided for handling the workpieces when the rollers are set to the separation second gap, allowing the workpiece to fall under gravity between the rollers.
