Systems and methods of ion population regulation in mass spectrometry

A method of performing mass spectrometry includes accumulating, over an accumulation time, ions produced from components eluting from a chromatography column and transferring the accumulated ions to a mass analyzer. During an acquisition, a mass spectrum of detected ions derived from the transferred ions is acquired. An elution profile is obtained from a series of acquired mass spectra including the acquired mass spectrum and a plurality of previously-acquired mass spectra. The elution profile includes a plurality of detection points representing intensity of the detected ions as a function of time. A current signal state of the elution profile is classified based on a subset of detection points included in the plurality of detection points. The accumulation time for a next acquisition of a mass spectrum is set based on the classified current signal state of the elution profile.

In a device adjustment process, when a solenoid valve is opened, a gas resulting from vaporization of PFTBA held in a container is drawn into an ion source, a relationship between ambient temperature and a correction coefficient for actual signal values is experimentally determined beforehand. In an actual adjustment process, an ambient temperature acquirer reads the ambient temperature and refers to the correction information to determine the correction coefficient corresponding to the ambient temperature at that moment. A signal value corrector multiplies an actually measured peak area value by the correction coefficient to correct the actual signal value. A device adjustment controller adjusts a voltage applied to an ion detector so that the corrected actual signal value matches with a reference signal value. The voltage applied to the ion detector can be thereby adjusted so that the detector has the same level of gain independent of the ambient temperature.

A method that includes introducing at least one analyte into a gas plasma; generating neutral species from atoms of the analyte in the gas plasma; preferentially transporting the neutral species downstream of the gas plasma relative to any ions produced in the gas plasma; and reacting the neutral species of the analyte with at least one reagent ion downstream of the plasma resulting in ion species of the analyte, wherein the at least one reagent ion is supplied by an independent ion source.

Gas isotope analysis

Systems and methods are provided for analyzing isotopes of a gas from a wellbore to determine geological information associated with the wellbore. A drill device can be used to drill rocks or particles in a wellbore, which can cause a gas to be released within the wellbore. Fluid can be pumped into the wellbore as the drill bit drills the rocks or particles and the fluid, along with the gas released, can flow through the wellbore and to a surface of the wellbore. A gas detector can be positioned near the wellbore for detecting an amount of gas and a type of gas in the fluid and gas mixture and transmitting data about the amount and type of the gas to a computing device. The computing device can output data based on the amount and type of gas in the mixture for determining geological information about the wellbore.

Described is a method for detecting the presence of natural hydrocarbon compounds in drilling cuttings. The method includes introducing a chemical standard to an oil-based drilling fluid, producing a tagged drilling fluid. Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) is used to determine a concentration of hydrocarbon compounds in the tagged drilling fluid, which corresponds to a first hydrocarbon signal. The tagged drilling fluid is circulated in a borehole during drilling, and the drilling cuttings mixed with the tagged drilling fluid are recovered. Hydrocarbon compounds are then extracted from the drilling cuttings. GC-MS is used to determine a concentration of hydrocarbon compounds present in the drilling cuttings that were mixed with the tagged drilling fluid, which corresponds to a second hydrocarbon signal. Based on the difference between the first and second hydrocarbon signals, an initial concentration of natural hydrocarbons in the drilling cuttings prior to mixing with the tagged drilling fluid is determined.
