According to one embodiment, an electronic apparatus includes processing circuitry. The processing circuitry estimates a first AoA of an arrival wave corresponding to a received signal from a receiving element array. The processing circuitry determines whether the estimated first AoA is an outlier or not. The processing circuitry outputs the first AoA as a second AoA, when the first AoA is not to be an outlier. The processing circuitry acquires one or more main-lobe angles assuming that the first AoA is a side-lobe angle of the receiving element array, when the first AoA is to be an outlier. The processing circuitry determines whether the main-lobe angle is an outlier or not. The processing circuitry outputs the main-lobe angle as the second AoA, when the main-lobe angle is not to be an outlier.

The apparatus may comprise means for receiving, at a plurality of antennae, a reference signal associated with positioning and determining cross-correlation values comprising a cross correlation between the reference signal received at each antenna and a known reference signal associated with positioning. There may also be provided means for estimating a channel response for a reference antenna of the plurality of antennae using the cross correlation values, the known reference signal and an antenna correlation comprising a known relationship between a channel response of each antenna of the plurality of antennae and the channel response of the reference antenna, and determining a time of arrival and/or an angle of arrival of the received reference signal based on the estimated channel response for the reference antenna.

A measured phase difference of arrival (PDoA) of the electromagnetic wave is determined based on the measured phase of each of the antenna signals. The measured PDoA is corrected based on one or more crosstalk factors associated with the two receive antennas. The AoA of the electromagnetic wave at the two receive antenna is generated based on the corrected measured PDoA.

ANGLE OF ARRIVAL CAPABILITY IN ELECTRONIC DEVICES

A method includes obtaining channel information, range information, and angle of arrival (AoA) information based on wireless signals communicated between an electronic device and an external electronic device. The method also includes generating an initial prediction of a presence of the external electronic device relative to a field of view (FoV) of the electronic device based on the channel information and at least one of the range information or the AoA information. The initial prediction includes an indication of whether the external electronic device is within the FoV or outside the FoV of the electronic device. The method further includes performing, using a tracking filter, a smoothing operation on the range information and the AoA information. Additionally, the method includes determining that the external electronic device is within the FoV of the electronic device based on the AoA information, the smoothed AoA information, and the initial prediction.
