Each photoelectric receiver is connected to a radiating element in its array at a position identical to the one that said receiver occupies within its own or a position symmetrical thereto.

System and method for calibrating vehicular radar sensing system

A method for calibrating a vehicular radar sensing system includes disposing two spaced apart calibrating radars at respective transmitting locations that are spaced from a vehicle calibration location at an end of line portion of a vehicle assembly line, and moving a vehicle along the vehicle assembly line, the vehicle including an electronic control unit (ECU) and a vehicular radar operable to sense exterior of the vehicle. Signals are transmitted via the first and second calibrating radars at the transmitting locations and, with the vehicle at the vehicle calibration location, the plurality of radar receivers of the vehicular radar receive the transmitted signals transmitted by the first and second calibrating radars, and the vehicular radar generates an output that is processed at the ECU. Responsive to processing at the ECU of the output of the vehicular radar, misalignment of the vehicular radar at the vehicle is determined.

A calibration utilizes reference data indicative of a position of a target element relative to a reference location, of a position of a reference point on a rotatable support relative to the reference location, orientation data indicative of at least one angular position of the rotatable support, and antenna measurement data indicative of electromagnetic echo signals received by a radar antenna from the target element. A measured position of the target element relative to the radar antenna is determined based on at least a portion of the antenna measurement data. A reference position of the target element relative to the radar antenna is determined based on the reference data and on at least a portion of the orientation data. At least one bias value or function associated with the orientation data and/or the antenna measurement data is determined based on a deviation between the determined measured position and reference position.

Systems and methods for modulation and demodulation using a micro-Doppler effect are described. In an embodiment, the method includes radiating, using a picosecond pulse generator with an antenna, a train of THz pulses that form a frequency comb, where the frequency comb is reflected from an object such that the frequency several tones in the frequency comb are shifted based on the speed of the object and demodulating the reflected frequency comb to recover a THz Doppler signature of the object.

A central processor evaluates the environmental data from the radar sensor unit and determines the traffic situation within the monitoring region based on the environmental data. A reference signal unit for outputting a reference signal to the radar sensor unit is configured to modulate a radar signal emitted by the radar sensor unit and to reflect a modulated radar signal back to the radar sensor unit as a reference signal. The processor identifies the modulated radar signal as a reference signal from the reference signal unit and recognizes a malfunction of the radar sensor unit if a reference signal is not received by the radar sensor unit.

A testing device for testing a distance sensor includes: a receiver for receiving an electromagnetic free-space wave as a receive signal; an analog-to-digital converter configured to, in a simulation mode, convert the receive signal into a sampled signal; a signal-processing unit configured to: delay the sampled signal or a modulated sampled signal to form a delayed sampled signal or a modulated delayed sampled signal; and modulate, upon the sampled signal or upon the delayed sampled signal, a predeterminable Doppler signature as a characteristic motion profile of a reflecting object to be simulated to form the modulated sampled signal or the modulated delayed sample signal; a digital-to-analog converter configured to convert the modulated or the modulated delayed sampled signal into a simulated reflected signal; and a transmitter configured to radiate the simulated reflected signal or a simulated reflected signal derived from the simulated reflected signal as an output signal.

Detecting misalignment

Apparatus for detecting misalignment of a radar unit (2; 22) of a vehicle (3; 23), the apparatus comprising: a magnet (1; 21), which may be a permanent magnet or an electromagnet, arranged to be mounted on the vehicle (3; 23) spaced from the radar unit (2; 22); a magnetic field sensor (4; 24), typically a three-axis magnetic field sensor, such as a Hall Effect Sensor, arranged to be coupled to the radar unit (2; 22) and having an output at which a signal indicative of the magnetic field at the magnetic field sensor (4; 24); and a processor (5; 25) coupled to the output and arranged to determine a misalignment of the radar unit (2; 22) based on the output of the magnetic field sensor (4; 24). Where the magnet is an electromagnet (21), the field strength of the electromagnet (21) can be varied by its drive circuit (30).

In an embodiment, a method for testing a millimeter-wave radar module includes: providing power to the millimeter-wave radar module; performing a plurality of tests indicative of a performance level of the millimeter-wave radar module; comparing respective results from the plurality of tests with corresponding test limits; and generating a flag when a result from a test of the plurality of test is outside the corresponding test limits, where performing the plurality of tests includes: transmitting a signal with a transmitting antenna coupled to a millimeter-wave radar sensor, modulating the transmitted signal with a test signal, and capturing first data from a first receiving antenna using an analog-to-digital converter of the millimeter-wave radar sensor, where generating the flag includes generating the flag based on the captured first data.

SIMULATION SYSTEM FOR TESTING A RADAR SYSTEM

A simulation system for use in testing a radar system comprises a coarse delay module, a fine delay module, and a doppler shift module. The coarse delay module is configured to receive a first stream of digital data samples that are sampled from a radar signal at a sample time period or a second stream of digital data samples that are processed by another simulation system component and delay the digital data samples by a selectable first delay time that is greater than or equal to the sample time period. The fine delay module is configured to receive the digital data samples and filter the digital data samples to represent delay by a selectable second delay time that is less than the sample time period. The doppler shift module is configured to receive the digital data samples and adjust a value of a frequency content of the fine delayed samples.
