Determining a seismic quality factor for subsurface formations from a seismic source to a first VSP downhole receiver
11703607 · 2023-07-18 · ·

A method or system is configured for determining a seismic attenuation quality factor Q for intervals of subsurface formations by performing actions including receiving vertical seismic profile traces. The actions include filtering the vertical seismic profile traces with an inverse impulse response of a downhole receiver. The actions include transforming the vertical seismic profile data from the particle motion measured by the downhole receiver to the far-field particle motions represented by the source wavelet. The actions include determining a ratio of the spectral amplitudes of the direct arrival event of the transformed vertical seismic profile data and the source Klauder wavelet. A quality factor Q is generated representing an attenuation of the seismic signal between the source at ground level surface and the downhole receiver.

Waves from cement bond logging with a sonic logging-while-drilling tool (LWD-CBL) are often contaminated with tool waves and may yield biased CBL amplitudes. The disclosed LWD-CBL wave processing corrects the first echo amplitudes of LWD-CBL before calculating the BI. The LWD-CBL wave processing calculates a tool wave amplitude and a phase angle difference as the difference of the phases between the tool waves and casing waves. The tool waves are then used to correct the LWD-CBL casing wave amplitude and remove errors introduced from tool waves. In conjunction with the sets of operations described, the LWD-CBL wave processing also include array preprocessing operations. Array preprocessing may employ variation of bandpass filtering and frequency-wavenumber (F-K) filtering operations to suppress tool wave.

A new method for iteratively picking the seismic first breaks and conducting imaging of the near-surface velocity structures in an iterative fashion is provided that the first-break picks of the input seismic data are applied to image the near-surface velocity structures and the calculated travel times associated with the updated velocity structures are applied to help refine the first-break picks in the first break picking process until first-break picks satisfy a number of quality control criteria, statics solutions are optimized, and the near surface imaging reaches an acceptable data misfit. This invention produces a velocity model that can be used for near surface statics corrections or for the prestack depth migration.
